Kota Kinabalu area (Malaysia) 20/12/2004

Our Borneo escape

Kota Kinabalu area (Malaysia) We decided to visit Borneo[sabah] as we have travelled to quite a few places in asia, and wanted to try somewhere abit differant. We flew from Manchester to Kuala lumpur, the capital city with Malaysian airlines, and spent a few days ,relaxing and adjusting to the heat and humidity before taking a short 2 hour flight to Kota kinabalu. We stayed at the Tanjung aru resort, one of the well known shangri-la group hotels. It is a fabulous hotel, and anyone could quite happily spend a week or two there without leaving the resort, but why go all that way when all around you there is such a wide range of nature and activites to explore. If you like beaches, jump on one the hotels speed boats, and five minutes later you have the choice of five glorious islands to spend the day,the water is crystall clear, and so very warm, the snorkling is brilliant, and if you are lucky you may get a moniter lizard[ot two] wonder past . There are hiking trails through the centre of the islands, and you can even find a stretch of beach exclusivily for yourself. If you are into something abit more challenging, how about a spot of mountain climbing.Mount kinabalu,south-east asia's highest mountain is only a couple of hours away, and the climb is pretty tough. I'm proud to say i made it [by torchlight] to the summit, just in time to see the sun rising,a sight that i will never forget. If wildlife is your interest, the sister hotel, the rasa ria has it's own orangutans, they live in a natural forest beside ...

Langkawi - General (Malaysia) 29/09/2003

Beautiful Langkawi

Langkawi - General (Malaysia) We flew to Langkawi as part of a 3 centre holiday to the far east,it was a short flight from Phuket in Thailand. As we got off the plane, the heat once again surrounded us,we were picked up and taken on a short ride through small villages, untill we came to our home for the next 10 nights, the Berjaya resort on the north west corner of the island. The resort is large ,and alot of the 300+ chalets are situated way back in the jungle. We were very lucky, our chalet was near the front of the resort ,over-looking the sea.We unpacked, and went out exploring,we had seen pictures of the beach, but it is much nicer than we had expected, quite along, broad expance of sand, and turquiose/green sea. From the beach you can look up and see the mountains, and the dreaded cable car[i have a fear of heights!!!].The cable car is a new tourist attraction, that was only installed last year. You can walk to the cable car station from the Berjaya ,it is situated about 10 minutes walk away at the oriental village, another new attraction in Langkawi. The oriental village is a very pretty ,well laid out collection of duty free shops, and restaurants, surrounded by beautiful landscaped streams and gardens. One day we hired a couple of push bikes, and cycled to the huge waterfalls near to the hotel,it was a very steep hike up to the top,but well worth the effort, there were local children having a great time playing in all the pools of water, and monkeys running all over the place,we got some brilliant pictures of mothers ...

Thai Airways International - THA 28/09/2003

THAI AIRWAYS

Thai Airways International - THA We have flown with Thai airways about 12 times in all.Twice from Heathrow to Bangkok, and various other shorter routes internally. The flight from Heathrow airport to Bangkok airport is a very long flight,12 hours in all.We left a very cold and rainy England at 11 am ,and arrived in hot, steamy ,sunny Bangkok at 6 am the next morning. The flight was very comfortable, although we can never sleep,we are far to excited at the prospect of getting back to one of our favourite places. There is alot of legroom ,the seat pitch is about 32 inches, which is alot more space than you get on most other airlines. The air hostesses are beautifully dressed,in long shimmering satin dresses, they are immacually made up,and are very helpful, and always smiling, nothing is to much trouble ,and they are constantly coming around with drinks and snacks. The food served on board gives you a very small taste of the delicious meals you can sample in the far east. There are several films shown during the flight, but unless you are sat in the right seats,it can sometimes be abit diffulcult to view the screen. All the flights that we have flown on with Thai airways have all been on time, and the takeoffs and landings have been very smooth. We would have no hesitation in recommending This airline,i am sure we will be using them ourselves again before to long.
