20/20 Experience - Justin Timberlake 22/03/2013

He's Back

20/20 Experience - Justin Timberlake BACKGROUND Debut Seven years have passed since Justin Timberlake's last album. When Timberlake left the boy band 'N-Sync' and released his debut solo album, 'Justified' back in 2002, there was a lot of anticipation built, I think the words, "Michael Jackson's replacement' might have even been flung around. Whether he got to the musical heights of MJ is a debate for another time. 'Justified' featured the hits 'Cry Me a River' , 'Rock Your Body' (Which both peaked at #2 in the UK singles chart) and 'Señorita' (my personal favourite). The album sold nearly 500,000 copies in it's first Week in the US and was only pipped to number 1 by the '8 Mile Soundtrack'. In the UK he landed the number 1 for 7 consecutive weeks, selling 1.5 million copies in total. A near perfect debut solo album. FutureSex/Love Sounds In 2006 (later than expected due to the controversy at the Superbowl), he released his follow up, 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' . It stormed the US charts selling over 600,000 copies in its first week. It reached number 1 on both Billboard's top 100 and UK's Singles chart. The album had 3 singles reach number 1 in the states: 'Sexyback', 'My Love' and 'What Goes Around Comes Around' . This album was more diverse than his debut as he blended his R&B/pop style with soul and rock. This was due to Timberlake wanting to include include some of his influences (David Bowie and Prince). The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and was nominated for 4 Grammys as well as being ...

2 - Netsky 25/06/2012

Netsky's Back

2 - Netsky I'm a massive fan of dance music including drum and bass. In 2010 the Belgian Netsky released his self-titled debut album which I loved. He created a relaxing dance album, you could play to do just about anything. He had created his own unique sound and I was surprised he did not recieve widespread attention. He may not have put much effort in to naming his second album, but there is a lot of effort in the 15 tracks from it. His unique stamp is still recognisable across the whole album and it is as good as his debut. Tracks 1) Love Has Gone Simple repeated line 'Love Has Gone' followed by a great electro riff and the drum and bass beat. Play this loud! Great start to the album. 9/10 2) The Whistle Song featuring Dynamite MC Starts of nice and slow before a jazzy melody is intorduced. Then a electro 'whistle' builds up before Dynamite MC exclaims, "We're gonna do this one for the love". Really uplifting track. One for the summer. 8/10 3) Wanna Die For You featuring Diane Charlemagne High pitched continuous melody is supported by a building drum beat before Diane Charlemagne's voice is introduced. This song has a very strong chase and status vibe about it. Another great track not quite as uplifting as it's previuos song. 7/10 4) Come Alive A trademark high pitched echoed riff starts before a repeated vocal "wow" and other sounds before the lyrics kick in. With the quality of the tracks declining Netsky has added this track which he released earier in the year in ...

Street shopping vs Online shopping, which is better? 24/06/2012

Online.

Street shopping vs Online shopping, which is better? As a 19 year old I have hadd a few years of experiencing both. When you hit the teenage years going to the the town centre with a few mates is an essential part of growing up and experiencing adult life. At that age you just want to get away from your parents and school so you don't care about the cons of shopping in the street. Online shopping has blown up in the last five years or so with more online shopping websites than actual shops. The ability to sit at home and order something within the a few minutes has become almost a reflex. However, is it all that it's hyped up to be? Street Shopping The Good * Ability to try on clothes/See actual items first hand. * Purchased items taken home same day. * In-shop deals. * Socialising with friends, family etc. * Atmosphere. The Bad * Atmosphere. * Other shoppers. * Untrained/unhelpful staff. * Selection of shops. * Distance to high-street. Street shopping's main advantage is the ability to try on clothes or see the item you are purchasing first hand. You can make sure you get the right colour and size. Also a benefit of shopping is being able to have your product at home with you the same day you bought it. This is useful if you are in need of a specific item in a short amount of time. You can also pick up bargains in-store that are not available online and with large city shopping centres you can make a day out of it with friends and/or family. Then there is the atmosphere. Walking through the town centre you have ...

Prometheus (DVD) 03/06/2012

So Close to Perfection

Prometheus (DVD) The year 2012 will be remembered for a lot of things, Olympics, the Queen's Jubilee, the year England win the Euro's?! Well the last one might not exactly happen but one thing that might get forgotten is the amount of BIG films that are released. Back in January and February we had the oscar contenders with the likes of 'The Descendants', 'War Horse', 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close'. We also had good flicks like 'The Grey', 'The Woman In Black' and 'The Muppets'. March brought us some good light-hearted movies. 'This Means War', 'Contraband' and 'We bought a Zoo' did well amongst the first 2 big blockbusters of the year. The first film from the Hunger Games books was released along with the disappointments of 'John Carter' and 'Wrath of the Titans'. April followed suit and after the releases of 'Battleship' and 'Titanic's' re-release in 3D, Marvel's 'Avengers Assemble' had the best opening weekend ever bringing in $207.4 million (beating Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2 which made $169.2 million). It also was the fastest film to make $100 million, $150 million and $200 million. Any films that released in April were squashed by Hulk, Captain America and the rest of the Avengers. I still haven't seen this, purely because I don't see what the hype is all about. May was the month of comedies. 'American Reunion' as well as 'Jeff who lives at home' and 'The Dictator' were released with two other summer blockbusters; 'Men In Black 3' and 'Snow White & The Huntsman'. ...

Club Life, Vol. 2 (Miami/Mixed by Tiësto) - Tiësto 24/05/2012

There won't be a better dance album all year

Club Life, Vol. 2 (Miami/Mixed by Tiësto) - Tiësto I'm a big fan of dance music and I am a subscriber of tiesto's club life podcast. I downloaded the album and it instantly became the only album I played. Although this is a Tiesto album it features tracks from Axwell, Coldplay and afrojack just to name a few. Now with most compilation albums you buy, whatever the genre, there is often the odd track that you don't like but this is one of the few that I like them all. Of course, some tracks are stronger than others but it's just a very good "get in the party mood" album. Tracks 1. Miami by Tiësto Slow melodic opening that fades into next track. Length: 2m 5s Rating *** 2. Chasing Summers by Tiësto Instrumental with high pitched upbeat chorus. Also feature strong baseline breaks. Length: 4m 15s Rating: **** 3. We Own The Night by Tiësto and Wolfgang Gartner featuring Luciana. The first vocal track on the album is a great collab with Wolfgang Gartner, an up and coming produced signed to deadmau5 label mau5trap. The title sums up wha the track is about and Luciana's voice works well with the two producer's high pitched melody. Length: 4.30 Rating: **** 4. What can we do (A Deeper Love) [Third Party Remix] by Tiësto One of my favourite tracks off the album. It's a very intense and 'trancey' song that has the small repeated vocal to accompany a heavy beat. Length: 4m 36s Rating: ***** 5. If A Lie Was A Love (Baggi Begovic KNAL Remix) by Baggi Begovic featuring Josie Cotton. Now I don't know if it's because the previous track ...

Snowtown (DVD) 22/05/2012

One of the Hardest films you'll ever watch.

Snowtown (DVD) I'd heard good things about this film and as a movie fanatic I'm always open to watching any film that is meant to be good. I rented It through love film and read some other customer reviews. Most of them detailed how dark and uncomfortable the film was to watch, but still gave it a high rating. The plot is based on the true story of John Bunting, an australian serial killer. However, the main character is a teenager called Jamie Vlassakis. He lives with his poor mother and is the second oldest of four brothers. You don't see much of the oldest as he is often out of the house. The boys lack a father figure in their lives which their mother tries to rectify by dating men to fill the gap. The first 30 minutes is a very powerful and intense opening and you are not even introduced to John Bunting. Jamie's mother is dating a man from across the street and asks him if he can look after the kids while she goes out. The next thing we see is each boy stripped down to his briefs being photographed by this man. At dinner, the boys as you expect, are not themselves and after the mother finds out what he did she goes to confront him. The camera tracks her as she runs over from her dinner table to this mans house where she violently attacks him and screaming "What have you done to my kids!" At the end of the shot the boys are seen staring at their mother. After ringing the police, she invites her friends to her house where they discuss what happened and what should happen to pedophiles. ...

Red State (DVD) 17/04/2012

Not What I Expected

Red State (DVD) Imdb's Plot Summary: Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda. My Plot Summary: Three lads search the internet for sex, end up getting taken hostage by an anti-homosexual cult and The FBI get involved. If your still reading this then either A) your crazy, B) you want some more information before you completely rule it out, or C) You like Kevin Smith's previous films. After reading the synopsis, I wasn't going to watch it. When I found out that is was a Kevin Smith film and that Quentin Tarantino had been quoted saying "He Freakin Loved this film" I thought I'd give it a go. I was expecting a horror and for the first 20 minutes of the film it looked like that was what I was going to get. The plot is based on 3 school kids who search the internet for girls interested in sex. Jarod (Kyle Gallner), the leader of the gang, informs his mates that he has been talking to this girl who is interested in having sex with them all together. Now, I'm pretty sure i'm not alone here but I would not want to have sex with one girl and two of my mates. But this doesn't cross Travis' (Michael Angarano) or Billy-Ray's (Nicholas Braun) mind for a split second. They are too busy staring at a naked photo of the girl. When travelling to the meet, the boys sideswipe a local Sherrif's car. The Sherrif is somewhat preoccupied with another man to deal with the boys who drive off. This ...

Watch the Throne (Parental Advisory) [PA] - Jay-Z 18/01/2012

Brilliant Collaboration, a few weak tracks though.

Watch the Throne (Parental Advisory) [PA] - Jay-Z Jay-Z and Kanye are kings of this genre and this album title is a homage to that. 'Watch The Throne' will not effect either of them in terms of status or fan base. They have worked on songs before including the hit with Rihanna, 'Run This Town' which featured in Jay-Z's album 'The Blueprint 3'.After hearing 'H.A.M.' I was slightly disappointed as it was not what I expected and I forgot about the album for a while. It was a friend who reminded me about it and I checked for a release date because it had seem a long time since I had first listened to 'H.A.M'. It was already available for pre-order on iTunes which surprised me as I had not heard much about it. I downloaded it after hearing the single 'Otis'. This was much better and I had a lot of anticipation. The album consists of twelve tracks but I downloaded the deluxe edition as it contained four bonues tracks. There is a great consistency across the album and thankfully the worst song on the album was 'H.A.M' which I had already heard. The songs manage to have a perfect balance of Jay-Z's classy rapping and Kanye's great electro sampling and likeable auto-tune.Tracks1) No Church In The Wild (feat Frank Ocean)A moody simple continuous guitar riff begins and Jay-Z starts the song after the chorus from Frank Ocean. It's a dark gospel rap about religion and the church.7/102) Lift Off (feat Beyonce)This is a much more pleasing track. Beyonce fits in perfectly and although Kanye uses auto tune, we all know who has the actual ...

50/50 (DVD) 16/01/2012

100/0 - Chance of liking this film

50/50 (DVD) 50/50 is based on a true story of a 27 year-old man who after complaining of back pain is diagnosed with a rare spinal cancer. The film showcases his life and how he copes with the difficulties that come with having cancer. The story is written by Seth Rogen's best friend, Will Reiser who was diagnosed with Schwannoma Neurofibrosarcoma, a rare cancer at the age of 27. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock From The Sun, (500) Days Of Summer, Inception) plays Will or Adam Learner as in the film. He is a brilliant actor and is fast becoming a hollywood star. Seth Rogen (40 Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People) plays himself or Kyle as in the script. Honestly, I think he plays himself in every film he has been in. He plays the best friend role well and is very likeable. Most of the humour does come from his antics and although it is generally male based, it isn't vulgar or abusive. The film begins with Adam running and it shows what kind of man he is. He is healthy, and doesn't tend to break any rules as even though it is early in the morning he doesn't cross the road until the 'WALK' sign is lit. This is an important part in the film as you will see as the film develops. He is living with his girlfriend, Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) in a small rented house. He doesn't drive so is picked up by Kyle where they go to work. He is frustrated that they are late already so it annoys him when Kyle stops off for Coffee before. Another example of how he doesn't like to break rules. During ...

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (DVD) 16/01/2012

Action at it's Best

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (DVD) After reading that there was to be another Mission Impossible, I wasn't particularly bothered about watching it. The trailer looked a bit over the top and predicted that it would be very average. I liked 'Mission Impossible 3' and hoped that it didn't spoil the good action trilogy. So, when I heard the reaction it received, I was quite surprised. It has 93% positive reviews on 'Rotten Tomatoes' and a rating of 7.8 on 'IMDb'. For it's genre these are very high scores and this persuaded me to go and watch it. The plot is fairly straightforward, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team, Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and Jane Carter (Paula Patton) are fighting against time to catch terrorist Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist) who has gained access to nuclear launch codes and plans to use them to attack the US. An attempt at the Kremlin to stop him lands him them in trouble after an explosion causes the President to shutdown IMF, meaning they will have know help to continue their mission. This is known as 'Ghost Protocol'. This won't stop Ethan Hunt. They travel to Dubai and then Mumbai to catch him before it's too late. This is when the film really gets going in terms of crazy action and sublime stunts. When in Dubai Hendricks' right-hand man Wistrom is to get the codes from an assassin called Moreau in exchange for diamonds at the Burj Khalifa (The tallest building in the World) . Ethan and his team plan to trick both Wistrom into by using Jane who poses as Moreau ...

Every Kingdom (+DVD) - Ben Howard 09/01/2012

ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

Every Kingdom (+DVD) - Ben Howard You will see in a minute the reason for this but I usually just give my opinion in these reviews and a little research into the facts and figures of what it is I am reviewing but with this item, I had to do more.I previously suggested that if there was only one album you bought this year, then it should be 'Mylo Xyloto' by Coldplay. I was wrong. This is the album everyone should own. Ben Howard's debut album is astonishing and one of the most consistent albums I've ever heard. Ben Howard, 24 is a singer-songwriter from Devon, UK. He was brought up by his parents and they introduced him to music and in particular Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan were big influences on him. He has received a lot of praise from radio 1 DJs including Zane Lowe. The Album consists of ten tracks. All of which are brilliant. Of course some are better than others but there isn't one poor or even average song. Ben released 'The Wolves' which became a huge success and was followed by 'The Fear' and 'Keep Your Head Up'. In 2012 Ben will be releasing the album in the states and is already confirmed to be playing at SXSW and a US Tour will follow. If you look at artists this year, such as Ed Sheeran who released his debut ' ' album, who received immense critical acclaim you wonder why Ben Howard is not up their with them. He is able to create songs that make you feel inspired yet emotional at the same time. Tracks1) Old Pine. The opening song to the album is a prologue of what is too come. A simple guitar ...

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (DVD) 09/01/2012

Better than the original.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (DVD) The book for this was achieved critical acclaim and became an international bestseller; I was intrigued to find out what the fuss was all about. I'm not a keen reader, but love films. I asked friends and family that had read the book and found out that most of them as predicted said the book was better than the film. So I thought I'd give it a go. When David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en, The Social Network) was announced as the director for a Hollywood version, I had just started reading it. I found the book very slow but was determined to finish it. It's slow pace could be because of the translation as originally the novel was written in Swedish. After watching the original film, I started to appreciate the book more and was surprised at some of the praise the original film received. The story is a dark crime thriller about a disgraced journalist Mickael Blomkvist, (Daniel Craig) who has been hired by Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to investigate the murder of his niece, Harriet Vanger in September 1966 on Hedeby island, Sweden. There are several sub-plots to this story which make it entertaining but I assume difficult to make in to an entertaining film. Mickael BlomkvistDaniel Craig delivers a perfect portrayal of Blomkvist, although he doesn't have a Swedish accent. Blomkvist has just been found guilty of libel against Hans-Erik Wennerstrom, a billionaire financier for writing he was involved with weapons trafficking and other corrupt businesses in his magazine, ...

Moneyball (DVD) 23/11/2011

Not Quite A Home Run, But Great Film Nevertheless.

Moneyball (DVD) I was lucky enough to get a ticket to a free screening to this at my local cinema a few days before official release. I was eager to see this film after watching the trailer. I like sports films as they are great at keeping you tense and I find it interesting to learn about such amazing stories. However, Moneyball is different to your usual sports film. It's based on Michael Lewis' book about the Major League Baseball team, the Oakland Athletics and their General Manger, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and how he used statistical analysis to create a winning team at a budget price. A film about statistics? Surely it will be too confusing and very difficult to make entertaining? I bet these are the questions you are asking yourself, and you won't be alone. Many critics were surprised that this story had been made into a film. However, to their surprise the film is deeply engaging and is very entertaining. The Oakland Athletics or more commonly known as the As had just lost to the New York Yankees and their 3 best players from the season were leaving the team due to the fact that they could not afford them. Beane who "hates losing more than he loves winning" has to rebuild his team so they can challenge for the american league next season. The As have almost a third less to spend than the top teams in the league and this is expressed by Beane, "There are rich teams, and there are poor teams. Then there's 50 feet of crap. And then there's us." He needed to find cheap players that ...

Mylo Xyloto - Coldplay 21/11/2011

They just don't make bad music

Mylo Xyloto - Coldplay Coldplay have been around for sometime now so they have built a vast amount of fans. This means even if I reviewed this album was poorly, most hardcore fans would still go out and buy it. Anyway, I'll tell you what I think... SUPERB The Title 'Mylo Xyloto' (pronounced "my-low-zy-ly-o-tow") is as peculiar as the band's other 4 album titles but the contents is as strong as them too. There are 14 tracks in total including the singles 'Every Tear Drop Is A Waterfall' and 'Paradise'. Prior to this album, my personal favourite was X&Y as this was the first album I actually bought of theirs before then downloading their previous 2, 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' and 'Parachutes'. 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends' in my opinion was slightly weaker than the other 3 so I was hoping that they would release a fifth studio album and thankfully my wish was granted. 'Mylo Xyloto' is superb and for me, it is not far off being as good as 'X&Y'. 1) Mylo Xyloto The first track on the album is an instrumental piece which fades into the next track. Its fairly upbeat and is a good warm-up for the rest of the album. Duration: 43 seconds 7/10 2) Hurts Like Heaven This is a brilliant song. I have no doubt this will be their next single release. The track is a typical chirpy Coldplay song featuring Chris Martin's unique vocals which brings like always an energy to the song. Duration: 4 minutes 2 seconds 9/10 3) Paradise Paradise is a great track that has a similar quick ...

Bridesmaids (DVD) 04/07/2011

I'm life Annie and I'm biting you in the ass!

Bridesmaids (DVD) When I first saw the trailer to this film I shuck my head and thought "Oh dear, that looks awful". However, critics started to rave about it and I thought well if it pleases the grumpiest people in the world then it might be worth a watch. I went to with a friend who was also keen to see it and somehow we had to sit front row because the screen was a sell-out, which is always a good sign. The film stars Kristin Wiig who plays the main character in the film, Annie. Her life has become decreasingly worse as her cake business went bankrupt during the recession and her long-term boyfriend left her because of this. She finds out that her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is engaged and she is to be her maid of honour. However, the introduction of Lillian's new friend Helen (Rose Byrne), causes Annie to become jealous and she ends up ‘dishonouring’ her best friend. Annie is recovering from not just her business going under but also a break-up. The opening scene is her having sex with Ted (Jon Hamm) although she wants a relationship he refers to her as a “F*** buddy”. She meets Lillian the day after for coffee where they catch up like all women do. Lillian tells Annie that she is silly for sleeping with Ted and she needs to move on with her life. As they walk home this is where we first find out about her cake bakery called ‘Cake Baby’. Annie’s mother (Jill Clayburgh) persuades her to move back home but she decides against it after an awkward conversation. Annie works in a ...
