Braun 4735 Tricontrol 05/05/2005

A new Braun is born!

Braun 4735 Tricontrol Being a student, I have only recently began shaving on a regular basis. So it was quite a pleasant surprise to have one given to me for my birthday: the BRAUN 4735 waterproof electric shaver… **** Look / Feel **** I actually find this shaver to be very stylish, although I have not yet compared it to many other shavers. It has a rubbery texture, probably due to its waterproof feature. As you may have guessed from the picture, its blue and black (this is the only colour scheme I have found for this model). It has ergonomic (user friendly) grooves down the sides so that it's comfortable to hold and control. And now for the feel. Not the feel of the product, but the feel you experience on your face when shaving. And I must say, there is not much to it at all; no cuts, no pinching, just an all round clean shave! **** Features **** This shaver also features a long hair trimmer which you slide up from the side. This shaver has a new 'three stage cutting system', allowing progressively smoother shaving, which you can really see working. The foil geometry allows the blades to get as close as possible to your skin without causing any cuts or irritation. The head is designed at an angle to get to those annoying hard to reach areas, and the foil itself is spring loaded for extra movement. This shaver is waterproof, meaning that you can run the cutters under the tap to clean them when you have finished, without causing damage to the shaver itself. The shaver takes about ...

James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (PS2) 22/04/2005

we've learnt a few new tricks...

James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (PS2) I have had this game for a while now, and has been sat unplayed (if that is a word!) for a long time. It's a shame that these games can only be played once, because the game itself is absolutely stunning… Ok, so you've bought the game, got home, and whacked it into the disktray. This is where a long and frustrating loading sequence awaits you, before an amazing video with a cool soundtrack made specially for the game, which in a way redeems itself from the wait at the start. Right, so now your ready to start. Now, instead of beginning with some some sort of training, you are thrown right in at the deep end! Not in a bad way though- I actually found this to be a great tactic. Brief instructions are given on-screen to tell you what to do, so you quickly get used to the game. Eventually you find a rocket launcher which you must destroy a helicopter with (WOW! You haven't even got part way through the game yet and already its cool!), then jump off a ledge using one of your handy gadgets, the rappel gun, and shoot your way to victory! After this begins the real training, where you learn everything you need. I found the controls extremely easy to get used to. Well, what do I like about it? Well the fact that you are James Bond allows you to have extremely accurate aiming, and you can get very skilled at driving. You can also switch to 'Bond Sense' at any time, where game slows down to give you chance to think or change weapons. I also love the gadgets such as the ...

Princess 12/04/2005

the Caribbean Princess

Princess Almost 1000 feet in length. 116,000 tonnes. 3,110 passengers, 1,200 crew members. 19 decks high. I embarked my dream holiday cruise ship in February this year. I boarded at Fort Lauderdale after a spectacular time in Miami, where I had stayed at the five star intercontinental hotel. Out of all the ships docked, including the Queen Mary 2, the Caribbean princess stood out in a BIG way. Here’s my diary… I can’t describe how absolutely enormous the thing was. We embarked on the fifth floor, plaza deck, where my beautiful stateroom awaited. Once our luggage had arrived, since it had all been taken care of for us, we took a lift up fourteen floors to the top deck, where we stayed for sailaway. Immediately the steel drums were beaten and a party erupted! After a day at sea, we reached the small beach in the Bahamas, owned by the cruiseliner. Princess Cays, the most beautiful part of the trip, where you can snorkel around the rocks where hundreds of stunning tropical fish await you. I even had the privilege of finding an octopus hidden behind a rock! After a banana boat ride, volleyball and so many other activities, we once again boarded the ship. After another day at sea, we docked at St Thomas, where we took a cable car up the cliff for a stunning view of the Caribbean island. It looks just as beautiful as in the brochure. Next day was St Maarten/St Martin, which starred in the film “speed 2”. It is owned by the French on one side, and Dutch on the other. I didn’t ...

Sony PlayStation 2 - Slimline Model (PS2) 22/02/2005

just another money maker?

Sony PlayStation 2 - Slimline Model (PS2) I got this model from Argos in the January sales, because my little brother wanted a PS2 and so I gave my old one to him and bought the new one. It was only £99 and came with controls and a remote. It connects to my television in the same way as my previous PS2 and the graphics are pretty much the same. But that pretty much covers all the basic advantages of this machine. The machine itself, when the disk tray is closed, looks just like the old PS2, save for a little shiny black strip. The disk tray opens from the top, just like an old portable CD player. And the colour is exactly the same. And the graphics are not what you would expect from a newer version. All my games have shown absolutely no improvement on quality. Installing it is just like the older, fatter PS2- with either a SCART connection or into those three yellow white and red sockets (if there’s a specific name for them, please tell me!). You can also connect it to the internet and use it online, but for this you need some games which are online compatible. You can also insert an EyeToy camera (not included, but check out my review on them) or other such tools via the USB ports. What I don’t like about this model is the primitive CD-walkman type disk tray, which can become a nuisance if you lean the console on its side like I do! It should have been something just a little cooler, if you know what I mean… These features have led me to believe that the sale of this model is to boost Sony’s revenues so ...

Samsung Digimax V5 20/01/2005

Say SAMSUNG!

Samsung Digimax V5 Samsung has yet again reached us with another superb addition to its range of cameras. The Samsung Digimax V5 has 5.1 Megapixel quality that is more than enough to create stunning, high quality pictures. It has various functions- Video, Sound etc. and a 3X optical zoom, 12X Digital zoom, also more than enough. It also comes with a 256MB SD card that can store approx 250 images at a time. It will connect to your computer via USB, for faster picture transferring. Being the son of a professional photographer, I know what I'm saying when I say this is a great camera! **The Look** I have to say that this is not the most beautiful camera that Samsung has produced, but it still has its advantages. Its small and compact, with stylish easy to use buttons. The screen size is 3cm x 2.5cm, and is very detailed. The back has absolutely no large areas of space, because buttons and stylish patterns have taken up every bit of space. The zoom is located at the top-right of the camera and is a video camera style design. To the left of this is the little wheel that you twist to access the different features such as video, sound etc. The viewfinder is where it should be- the top-left. Directly below that is the high quality screen, and buttons surrounding it. On the bottom-right is the detachable thingy where you can access the power socket and connector socket. On the front however there is a lot of space, but why do you need many features on the front? There's a powerful flash, and a ...

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (PS2) 19/01/2005

Buckle up for the ride of your PS2 life!

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (PS2) Gran Turismo 3 A-spec is THE most legendary racing game of the century. This turbo charged, mind blowing experience will get you from nought to happy in no time flat- buckle up, because your in for the ride of your life! Gran Turismo 3 has it all- Rally, Nascar, F1, you name it. And what’s more, the cars actually handle exactly as they would in real life! The object of the game is to win more and more money, buy and win more and more cars for your garage, and prove that you are the Gran Turismo Champ! **The Graphics** Phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. The settings are based on real racetracks, and Boy oh boy are they detailed! And the cars- they look exactly like the real thing. But the replays are what really give this game justice. It’s hard to believe that you’re actually looking at an animation, because watching the replays are just like watching it on the telly! The only times when I felt detail was lacking is when you see the cars from behind as your racing. Especially with the Chrysler, you only get a blocky, pixelly image at the bottom of the screen. **The cars** There are hundreds if not thousands of cars to choose from in this game. Some you need to win, but you can purchase most in the shop. Every single car from the Peugeot 206 to the Dodge Viper has been beautifully mastered for this game. And the rally cars are just as great. But after hours of racing, your cars will soon wear out and need servicing, which is when you access the tune ...

The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2) 18/01/2005

Ow, my ovaries!

The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2) The Simpsons: hit and run is the hilarious, colourful cartoon version of grand theft auto. Drive around the whole of Springfield in crazy cars with Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Apu (Nahasapeemapetilon!). Drive yourself crazy in lawless 'Fender-benders' and chaotic head-on collisions, or unbuckle your seatbelt and set out on foot to investigate creepy crop circles and a diabolical conspiracy threatening to obliterate Springfield. Drop the donut and grab the wheel! **The story** The citizens of Springfield are growing suspicious over the sudden appearance of mysterious black vans and video cameras throughout the town. Where did they come from? Who's behind it all? And what's all the 'buzz' about New and Improved Buzz Cola? As the story progresses, you discover that it's Kang and Kudos, the evil aliens in the cartoon, are drugging everyone up with Buzz Cola so they act stupid. Their stupidity is caught on camera so that their reality TV show will go down a hit. They then start trying to hand out free laser pistols and film what happens. Only you can stop them. I thought this storyline was a bit cheesy, but it has some funny twists to help it along. **The Gameplay** This game is totally different to most others in that you simply keep laughing! It's the only game I know which gets you hooked because it's funny. Whilst playing the game, you will hear various phrases from each of the characters, for example Bart: Ow, my ovaries! Homer: Thingy goes up! Marge: Ow, my ...

Enter the Matrix (Xbox) 17/01/2005

In order to save Zion, What part will YOU play?

Enter the Matrix (Xbox) Battle alongside the original motion picture cast. Experience unparalleled film collaboration resulting in a true Matrix experience. Watch over an hour of exclusive film footage from the creators of the Matrix trilogy. All you Matrix fans out there, this game is the one for you! This game does not follow the film from the film's point of view, i.e. Neo, Morpheus and Trinity. Instead, fight your way behind the scenes as either Niobe or Ghost, following the story and successfully affecting what happens in the films. It's true- play the story within the story, for instance in the Matrix: Reloaded, Niobe and Ghost end up in the Matrix ready to help Morpheus on the freeway. But how did they get there, and what happened on their way? Well, play it! This game is the best of it's kind, featuring over an hour of exclusive footage filmed purely for the game. As you go through the game, you get certain information that you don't get from the movie. For example, in the film Niobe and Ghost must destroy the power plant before Neo gets to the door. You see the plant exploding but you do not see what actually happened inside. In this game you see what happens, and it is your job to destroy the plant. I found this game hugely enjoyable, and very addictive. I love the fighting styles and stunts you can do. I also love going into focus mode, which is when you see the action in super slow motion, which was a huge hit when making the films. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that ...

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (PS2) 17/01/2005

You'll play it to the end of time...

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (PS2) This game came free with my PS2, so it was the first adventure game I have played. And my God-does it put all the others to shame or what! You are the Prince of Persia (obviously), and at the moment a member of the King's army. Whilst you are in the maharaja's palace, you come across the legendary dagger of time. Once you manage to get at it, you find that it possesses the power to bring back time. Once you return, the king's vizier explains the power of the sands of time, and tricks the prince into opening them with the dagger. Suddenly, as the sands spread, everything goes haywire and you find yourself fighting sand creatures, which were once your allies. The sands of time are a dark substance created by the empress of time. It will turn people it touches into monsters, and the power can only be harnessed using the dagger. On your quest, you meet a beautiful girl from the Maharaja’s temple, who helps you fight your way through the game. The graphics were superb. The video clips are a phenomenal advance in gaming technology, and everything in the game is very clear. It is a dramatic improvement on the previous versions of the game, one of which you can unlock during the game. You will never struggle to see past the graphics, therefore optimising game play. And then there’s the fighting. I have to say that this is limited, but the moves you can do are so cool-jump off walls, over your enemies etc. the enemies get harder throughout the game, and so do you. You ...

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (PS2) 16/01/2005

Angel of Disaster

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (PS2) After playing all of the previous Tomb raider games, I thought how great it would be to buy the PS2 version. How wrong I was… I was so appalled at how absolutely rubbish this game was. The only thing different about it was a slight change with graphics, which itself is not as expected from a PS2 game. On the other hand, you can now punch, kick, and strangle your way through the game, which you could not before. But it goes completely differently than all the other games in that she's no longer the hero- She's on the run from the law. It takes ages before you actually get to be a Tomb-Raider, because you have to fight guard dogs, police etc in a city which has not been well programmed. You move about ten metres before it freezes and has to load, which gets incredibly frustrating. And then we get to the real enemies- Zombies. Yes, I suppose they were there in most of the other games: monsters, dragons etc. but this time, they have been created in a lab! Even an evil scientist would bother making zombies and similar creatures- it just doesn’t work. I spent all my time whilst playing it thinking, "when am I actually gonna raid a tomb?" So please, please seek an alternative game. But if you are a serious Tomb-raider fan, you can get it cheap now at game stores- I got mine a while ago as part of a 'Buy two for £30' thing. Thanks for reading, Alex x x ...

Matrix, The (1999) 15/01/2005

THE ONE film to watch

Matrix, The (1999) "You believe it's the year 1999, when in fact it's closer to 2199." The Matrix has to be the best thought out sci-fi movie of all time. Starring Keanu Reeves, this film will terrify and excite you. But what is the Matrix? "We only have bits and pieces of information. But what we know for certain is that some point in the early 21st century all of mankind was united in celebration. We marvelled at our own magnificence as we gave birth to AI (artificial intelligence). A singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines. We don't know who struck first-us or them, but we know that it was us that scorched the sky. At the time they were dependent on solar power and it was believed that they would be unable to survive without an energy source as abundant as our sun. The human body generates more bioelectricity than a 120volt battery and over 25000 BTU's of body heat. Combined with a form of fusion, then machines had found all the energy they would ever need. There are endless fields where human beings to not live- we are grown… What is the matrix? Control, the matrix is a computer generated dreamworld, built to keep us under control, in order to change a human being into a battery." So you see, this film has a complex but understandable storyline. But it gets even more complicated- Neo (Keanu Reeves) is the prophesied one, the one who will end the war between humans and machines. With the help of the all-knowing oracle (Gloria Foster), Trinity ...

Garfield (2004) 15/01/2005

What's big, orange and loves lasagne?

Garfield (2004) What's big, orange, loves lasagne and has just come out on DVD? Garfield of course! Okay, that was quite a poor joke, but it's really no joke- that cool, loveable fat cat has scratched his way to our TV screens in 3D! Well, as you know from the comics and cartoons, Garfield is a lazy, cool cat with a huge tummy. But when a dog moves into the house, everything goes not as swell as planned. Garfield plays tricks on the cute little puppy (played by a real dog-in fact all the animals are real except Garfield!), but when he's kidnapped, Garfield finds that he wasn't that bad at all, and goes searching for him. This leads to an array of funny and strange twists, and a great finish of which I will not spoil for you. What I absolutely love about this film is the Special effects that were used for Garfield. He looks slightly different from the cartoons but that's because he looks 3D and has brighter fur. I think the computer experts did a fantastic job- especially when Garfield freestyles down the stairs on a tray so he can catch up to his buddy Odie, who was kidnapped by an evil TV Producer. Presumably to keep the cost down, Garfield is the only animal that is animated. The rest of the feline, canine, and rodent cast is comprised of real animals whose lips are manipulated to allow them to speak. This causes Garfield to stand out. The director is Peter Hewitt, who directed Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, but whose most recent masterpiece was Thunderpants. The stars ...

I, Robot (DVD) 12/01/2005

I, love: I,Robot

I, Robot (DVD) Imagine the future: fast, safe cars, almost everything fully automatic, and best of all, Robots. Will Smith stars in this amazing film, set in 2035, about a bizarre but not unrealistic future where Robots roam the world like humans, with there own lives, points of view, and three laws safe: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2) A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. This film is about Del Spooner (Will Smith), a cop who’s specialty is in Homocide. He himself does not like robots because of his mysterious past, and is intrigued when Dr. Alfred Lanning, the man who invented the latest Robots and chairman of U.S. Robotics has mysteriously fallen to his death. Del, determined to blame a robot and therefore get rid of them, soon strikes lucky as the plot thickens. Soon, the robots start to break their laws and become hostile towards humans. With the help of Sonny, the robot that killed Dr Lanning, Del and Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan) get to the bottom of the problem and must destroy the central computer and stop the Robots. This film is the Best Sci-Fi I have ever seen and you simply must see it, no matter who you are! The story was nicely laid out and the ending will not disappoint you. The director (Alex Proyas) did ...

Nokia 3510i 11/01/2005

3510-Y?

Nokia 3510i I bought this phone quite a while ago, when it was one of the latest. And i mean, quite a while ago: it does not have a camera, bluetooth, and most other technical stuff which I can't even spell. The phone itself is actually not that bad; it's got a colour screen, WAP (mobile internet- Wireless application protocol), download games, ringtones, pictures etc. and has polyphonic ringtones. On the other hand, it has a small screen, images are blocky, and on my particular network I cannot seem to send or recieve media such as pictures. Also, when you are using WAP, it asks you twice if you want to access a link, which begins to get very annoying. On my model, bearing in mind it is now a couple of years old, I have difficulty with the keys when I'm txtin ma m8's (texting my mates!). They're sticky (not literally, just hard to push and sometimes don't come back up for about a second). I bought my phone for £69.99 on pay as you go (as long as I bought £30 airtime!), so I spent almost £100. You should get it a lot cheaper now, but there are not many places that sell it any more. I would recommend searching for a more up to date phone, but if your someone who just needs a cheap phone, then this could be one for you. thanks for reading... Alex x x x ...

Sony EyeToy USB Camera 16/11/2004

Eye Toy, My favourite Toy!

Sony EyeToy USB Camera Imagine a computer game that needs no controllers, has YOU on the screen, and gives you vigorous exercise every time. Impossible? The new Sony Eye Toy technology makes it possible for you to be the on-screen controller. That’s right! Move your arms, head, or any other part of your body to select and play loads of amazingly fun games! I currently own the Eye Toy camera, as well as Eye Toy: Play and Eye Toy: Play 2. the first version has 12 games for you to play, including kung foo (fight away your multiple enemies by punching them etc.), knockout (box with enemies), Mirror time (an incredibly frustrating game where you have to touch the green logos as the screen is flipped upside down, split four ways etc.) and a footie game (header the football as long as you can and use it to bash enemies which pop onto the balconies). When I purchased it I thought it was amazing, but then the second version was released… Eye Toy: Play 2 also has 12 games, but also has 75 games within these games. It also has a new feature, Spy Toy, which enables you to spy on whoever enters your room. When triggered, it will secretly take a photo. Look back at the photos in your own time to see who’s been snooping around. Also, you can create what is called a ‘Cameo’, which is a 3D image of your head which will change its expressions. Just take some photos using the camera, plot some points and voila! You can also use this head in other games. What I love about the camera is that there are ...
