Dotty

Advantages: Added interest, and an incentive of sorts….
Disadvantages: ….even if it's an irrational and unrewarding sort

For my 200th review, in the absence of any more inspirational ideas, I've decided to follow the round-number tradition and write an inward-looking review about Ciao itself. My subject is an aspect of Ciao some members feel strongly about: the community points system and the related scale of coloured dots. I'm not one of those members. I don't feel strongly about it, neither for nor against, though on balance I am mildly in favour for reasons explained ...
...because I find its effect on the behaviour of the Ciao community, myself included, very interesting.

For my text today, I am indebted to Charlotte (Tartlette83), who recently posted the following as her About Me:

"Woohoo! Purple! Silly isn't it but there is something addictive about those little dots!"

This strikes me as an excellent summary of most things worth mentioning about the points/dots ... more

Red,Yellow, Pink and Green and totally pointless

Advantages: For Ciao loads, for us none
Disadvantages: Encourage abuse and strange behaviour. Oh and did I mention they're pointless

...how good a reviewer the member is. Let's just make this clear, it doesn't. All the colour of the dot represents is how active the member has been on the site, my reviews are no better just because I have a poo coloured dot (well bronze really) beside my name, it just means I've either been a member for longer or been more active than a green dot. There also seem to be a minority of members that are scared of rating the metallic (or any of the higher) ...
...4. Check out the new member list, and write a even gushier welcome to Ciao comment both in their guestbook and on their first review (guaranteed to get you loads of trusts). 5. Continue to post at least one reasonable review a day. 6. Fill in all the challenge questionnaires you can find, even if you do find them boring. There you go, a zillion points in your first month. ***Disclaimer*** If you do this you might get loads of points, but is ...

Words from a lowly bogey dot...........

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...But as a relatively new member it seems to me that some people take their dot colour a little too seriously, and believe that anything red or above entitles them to look down on newer members. In Ciao's own words- ''Community Points are awarded for performing actions which are particularly useful to other members of the Ciao Community and other users of the website. Included in these actions are: writing helpful reviews, writing comments and rating ...
...me is how ACTIVE the member has been on the site, but again, what practical use does that have. I've seen numerous newer members being very active in their first burst of ciao inspired passion, often writing (or more accurately plagiarising) several reviews in the space of a day, and then leaving the comment 'Good Op' in as many reviews as they can possibly skim through. Tell me, is that kind of activity good? Or is it fundamentally useless? Then ...

Dots

Advantages: You can be violet.
Disadvantages: You can't stay violet forever.

...80 points each time another member adds you to their circle of trust 150 points each time you introduce another member to Ciao Gee whizz, I'm waffling. Most of you know this by heart already and those who don't have fallen asleep I expect. (Note to self: march straight in to opinion and commentary next time if you want to build yourself an awake readership). Right. Commentary. Commentary on dots. Why do I think Ciao have dots? Well, I gather, although ...
...at the same time as swingeing pay cuts for members quite a while ago. And I'd imagine they did that to stimulate a community feeling and encourage as much continued participation in all the things the site has to offer at a time when they weren't, clearly, going to be all that popular with their members. No one likes a pay cut, do they, even at the miniscule rates paid by opinions sites such as these. I gather also, at first, dots didn't stimulate ...

My Ops Aren't Red, But By Golly My Dot Is!

Advantages: Greatly simplifies the process of determining whether or not a writer merits being read.
Disadvantages: I'm a writer

...may be the first Ciao member to get booted from Ciao because I can't keep up with the monthly payments on my negative Ciao community points balance. •º• º•º •º• CONCLUDING THOUGHTS •º• º•º •º• Coloured spots are a WONDERFUL thing; Oh, the sense of achievement they bring! I'll fondly remember Each tortured new member I crush, to attain my gold ring. Despite my satire's non-wisdom, The points of these dots, as I twist'em, Is to keep a long list ...
...Should I have connected Ciao's dots? Realized Ciao's about points; earning lots? If it's "points," Ciao's about I'd say "Ciao!" and head out, "Spray-N-Wash" to your "V.I.P." spots. [In the following limerick, I attempted to include all of Ciao's "dot colours:"] "REMAIN DOT.COM" Whose whites does disa-green violet? Don't grow gold, feel blue or get upset Orange you glad instead, You're sil-very well-red? Better brains over bronze, than ...

Won't somebody pleeeeeease think of the newbie

Advantages: A Boost to the writer
Disadvantages: But......

...to feel like a fully-fledged member of Ciao and have earned yourself a Purple Dot to accompany that feeling. 20000-50000 points - Welcome to my world, the land of Sun, Sea, Sex (well for me but spam e-mails promoting it for you) and Red dots. 50000-100000 points - Ever felt you're lacking in Vitamin C? - well you won't with Ciao Industries latest - the Orange Dot. 100000-250000 points - chinkle the change in your pocket and what do you find? Well ...
...- recently we had a member go up to one of the highest colours you can get here on Ciao - at the same time as he elevated in colour I emptied my Circle of Trust, he was in it, isn't any more - he lost 80 points and dropped straight back to his lower level - to the person concerned - sooooooorry, but again Ciao need to watch for this kind of thing happening. I'm better than you: Jealousy, petty jealousy - and I've seen it a couple of times on this ...
