My son started teething at 3 months. No one warned me how bad it was going to be and that it started this young. He is an adorable little chap and overnight his personality changed. I thought the fairies had come in the night and swapped him.
The good news is that it only happens in patches. The bad news: they are usually at night.
The tell tale signs are: fractious baby, one red cheek and slobbering (not just a bit, but soaking thier clothes through).
My son was too young for any of the teething rings as he couldn't get them to stop in his mouth. The one thing which he could use were teething beads from Mothercare as they seemed to be easier to manipulate.
I used enough Calgel to keep the company afloat. It is useful to use short-term. James loves the flavour of it and would suck it off my fingers. Which leads to a top tip given by a children's nurse: pop some on thier own thumb and they will suck it off and relieve the pain that way. And that's the thing, how much of it is the teething gel and how much the pressure you are putting on thier gums I don't know, but it certainly makes you feel that you are doing something. It is mainly something I used until the Calpol kicked in.
Calpol has 1 major benefit: it makes James sleep. I used 2.5ml during the day and 5ml at night as the night pain seemed to be worse. It takes 20 mins to kick in and that's its major downfall.
Baby Nurofen after 6 months saved my sanity. It lasts longer and it more powerful. The only downside is that my baby wasn't particularly keen on the nasty orange flavour.
I must admit that painkillers were the only thing that I found useful.

Touch wood, I've not had any probs with my baby's teething. He cut his 1st tooth at 4 months and was fine, but I put this down to breastfeeding as they say that this is like an anaesthetic. But for emergencies I use Dentinox and this has also worked during the night, and there's no limit to how often you apply it. Good op. Jules x
