When i had my daughter in march this year i though that all the hard times were about six months, boy was i wrong. When my little one was six weeks i noticed the wight lines appearing on her gum, I thought there is no way she is teething already so i mentioned to the healthvisitor and she had a look and said no she is still to young for that. A few days later the dribbling started and gradualy got worse and is now at the stage that even with a bib i'm having to change her clothes twice a day. Seven weeks on and the tooth still wasn't through. This week however while i was feeding her she bit me and cut my skin. I'm so relived that it is finaly through but i'm not looking forward to the next few months as we now have the rest to go. I took my daughter to the healthvisitor this week and she was shocked, she said that she hasn't yet seen a baby with a tooth at 15weeks. It might have only just come through now but i have still had to endure nine weeks with a grumpy baby.
As my baby started teething early I was advised not to use any of the medications as most of them are for three months and over. But after a week of trying to deal with the screaming and trying to make do with a chilled teething ring, I gave in. I tryed many products and found that they never really worked. I'll list them and give the reason as to why i found them to be useless.
Bongela teething gel - It is impossible to rub into the gums of a dribbling baby, and if you have ever tryed to dry a babys gum you would know thats a pretty impossible task too. Only a little of the gel was getting on the gum and she was eating the rest. Also bongela has a very strong taste which isn't made any milder for babys.
Calgel teething gel - For exactly the same reasons as the bongela.
teething powders - I found that the powders make my daughters gums hard and rough. She would be screaming five minutes after i applyed them as if they were making the pain worse.
Calpol (liquid paracitamol) - I found that this did help with the pain but i didn't like the thought that i was keeping my baby druged up all day. Its not good for adults to take pankillers all the time so its deffinatly not good for babys.
So I was back to stage one, a screaming baby and no pain relief. Well, while doing my monthly shopping beside all the baby products i came accros a soother by tommy tippy it is rubber and is shape like the gum so that baby can bite down on it. I keep it in the fridge and when she starts having a moan i get itout and she happly chews on it for a while. however i did have to buy 3 so that i could have one out another in the steriliser and a spare one so that when it goes warm i can swap it for a cold one. Also I cut carrots into strips washed them well and froze them so that if she was really bad i would rub her gum with the icy cold carrot which she loves. Another tip is to put the babys dummy into the freezer for 10mis before you give them it so it is nice and cold and they will chew on it.
I hope my experiences can help you make your choice on what to use while your child is going through this painful ordeal.
