My daughter Charlotte is now 7 months old. To be honest, she has been a pleasure and I have loved every minute of every second...Until just recently when for the first time, my beautiful, quiet, happy, contented baby has turned into Satan!

Teething is something that you know is going to happen and it's really exciting when it starts because it's the next step but no-one really can prepare you or your child just what they are about to face as every child...tooth....pain is different!I have kept in good contact with my Anti-natal group and we try to get together when we can at one of our houses. All of our children (give or take a few weeks) are the same age and not one of our children are going through teething the same. My good friend's baby cut 6 teeth in the space of 2 weeks without a peep from him! You would never have known he had just had his gums 'split open' to allow these little pegs through! Another is going through absolute hell every night, hands always in the mouth, bad nappies rashes, spots and no sign of one tooth! I think that if just one would pop through, she could see light at the end of the tunnel but as yet, nothing!
Charlotte, my daughter, is somewhere in the middle. She has cut 4 teeth and all had different symptoms. She slept through the night at 8 weeks and is now regularly waking again 3-4 times in the night. She was always content and now is restless and clingy.
What I have realised going through teething( and still going through) is that there is no rule book. Every baby is different and every routine you have so proudly put into place goes out the window....But it's ok. It will get better (so i've been told) and it will end! Here are a few of my pointers that I have experienced....use as a guide! If you know they are going to happen, it won't be as bad when they do!
  • You may have to get up in the night again - go to bed earlier if poss
  • Get used to lots and lots of dribble - wipe mouths often
  • Red sore gums - put any teething toys in fridge to help soothe
  • Your baby will be in pain - Try all of the lotions and potions available in the chemist..calpol etc. One will work for you
  • Nappy rash - Your babys urine will be far more concentrated at this time so change nappies more often. If they do rash, I swear by 'metanium' but sudocream is very good. Try and avoid acidic fruit and veg at this time.
  • They will cry more than normal
  • They will be clingy
  • Bright red cheeks
  • Sore botty
  • Above all, dont lose faith in your little one. As my mum said to me when I moaned that she had stopped smiling at me...' you wouldn't feel like smiling either if you had a permanent headache in your mouth!' which is very true!
Good luck to every one who is going through this phase. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

I've often thought about how painful it must be for little babies cutting so many teeth at the same time, bless them...some good tips there x
