I recently bought a new CD-ROM wanting to up the speed a bit and so bought a Memorex 52x CD-ROM. Costing only £35 from Staples it looked good value. Unfortunately it wasn’t.

It worked intermittently at first but after about a week stopped working completely. It was at this stage that I realised firstly how useless the instructions were with the CD-ROM. At best these were ambiguous and at worst completely useless. As it was only meant to work as a plug-and-play device there were no boot disks either.

This being so I sent an e-mail to Memorex asking for advice. There has not been an answer yet but if I ever get one I’ll let you know. I also tried their helpline but having waited on the line for 5 minutes hearing various messages I gave up. The last message I heard told me I had called at a busy time. Well – excuse me – but message services like this mean one of two things. Either they have completely inadequate resources which means they do not care at all about customers who are inconvenienced or they have sufficient resources but there are just so many complaints any number of people could not handle them all. I wonder what it is with Memorex.

Eventually I gave up and Staples gave me a refund. I have replaced the CD-ROM with an LG one from PC World at £50. More expensive yes but at least it works.

I would avoid Memorex computer products unless you can determine properly that they will work as back-up service is atrocious.
