“Don't believe the hype.”

ProSo smooth, handling, looks

ConsFuel consuption, reliability

So you may see the 2.6 mercedes 190E as a solid, reliable car. You'd be wrong there. They can be solid and reliable, but only if really looked after. That engine needs 4000 mile oil changes to look after the timing chain, and the head gasket will need doing at around 100k to sort out an oil weep...

ConsSportline = low ground clearance

The Mercedes 190 2.6 is what it is. It was never ever meant to be an economical car or a particularly simple one....if that is what you are after then the 2.0 litre diesel 190 of the same era is what you are obviously looking for. Sure, any 20 plus year old car will have some issues at some time...

ProReliability, smooth and quiet, becoming a classic

Cons6000 service interval

I have owned a 190E 2.6 manual for 13 years, from 45k miles to date at 230k miles. It has been a great car, the best I have owned in 40 years motoring. It is smooth and powerful to drive normally, but a bit of a handful on snow and ice - a bag of sand in the boot helps! It is quiet and relaxing...

In my experience they are good cars to drive and the manual box is o.k but the clutch is a bit heavy on them but they look good done up and the fuel economy is quite bad but there is lots of room and boot space. They are good cars all round and i recomend buying one if its a good one.

My 190 2.6e is a remarkably reliable car. It always starts even when left for four months on one occassion. No down side except I find as a big guy the seats are a bit narrow, It is very quick and I have driven it several times for just under 1,000 kms at a go. I met a cab driver in Oporto who had one which he claimed had done over a million miles. My car is serviced by a local mechanic and costs little to maintain. Wish my 200K was as cheap to run.
