This is a review of my Long Wheel Base (LWB) A-Class (now sold) over the Short Wheel Base (SWB) which I still own.
*News* - the new model A-Class has increased in size to the equivalent of the old LWB model. This review is for all those out there who may consider a second hand purchase of the old (pre 2005) model.
The LWB model adds 170 mm to the overall length of the SWB model. Whilst this may not seem much, it is an appreciable difference internally, without greatly compromising the car as a very small and spacious mini-MPV. This is still a very small car which is easy to park and manoever around town.
With the front seats in use, rear foot space is tight (especially with a 5'10" driver) in the SWB model. The LWB extra space translates into a significant improvement in rear leg room during normal use. This equates to an executive class space in the rear footwell. ** The LWB is great if you tend to carry adult passengers in the rear seats **
The rear seat still slides back and forward but the runners have not been altered for the LWB - this means that the boot space is not increased by the additional length in normal use.
With the rear seats folded down (or flipped forward as they do), the new spaced is released and what a difference. The increase is appreciable and makes it far easier to carry large loads without removing the rear seats altogether.
With all rear seats removed, the load capacity of the LWB is vast. This makes the A-Class a very sensible mini load-lugger, the hight of the roof line adding to this capacity.
*TIP* when buying an A-Class, look for the optional removable front passenger seat to add even more space options. This is *not* standard on all models.
*TIP* I would not recommend the A140 LWB - get the A160 or A170 diesel or better. The extra weight of the car does not suit the smaller engine.
Pros ---- Added space for rear passengers Minimal difference for parking, everyday driving. Great load capacity. Improves ride quality over SWB slightly.
Cons ---- Does not translate into boot space in normal use. Not suited to smaller engine.
Why Keep my SWB Then? --------------------- The SWB had the larger 1.6l engine and was a better drive. The LWB A140 was underpowered and sruggled on hills, motorways.
Overall ------- The LWB is a good option for a used A-Class. Buy the bigger engines, especially if you have the auto box fitted.
