I purchased my A190 new in October 2001. The purchasing experience was a nightmare which almost resulted in a legal battle with the dealer. However even that has not dented my enthusiasm for the wonderful small car.
Mercedes-Benz have managed to produce a near perfect city car with the A-Class. By putting in a larger engine it also gives it the power for stress-free motorway cruising. The car is ideal for the city as it occupies no more road space than a Ford Ka yet can comfortably accommodate 4 people and luggage. The versatility of the seating is superb, people are always amazed by how much the A-class will hold with the seats removed. I have tested this to the limit with a house move and plenty of trips to the DIY shops.
On the open road the high seating position gives better visibility than a typical small family car. The 1.9, 125BHP engine gives plenty of punch for overtaking. On paper this car is as fast in a straight line as a typical hot hatch, however it is not a car to be hurried. The handling initially feels unusual with a fair amount of role in corners. Continued use inspires more confidence. It is a refined cruiser with sufficient in reserve when needed.
A lot of image lies behind the Mercedes badge. My experience is that the quality of the car is certainly better than average but there is room for improvement; I had a couple of rattles on delivery that were corrected by the dealer. I find the dealers polite and professional but the level of real customer service is no better than I have received from Ford, VW and Peugeot, and fall a little short of the “nothing is too much trouble” that I had expected (and previously experienced from BMW).
In summary, I think that the car is great; it ideally satisfies my motoring needs and even makes me feel good about driving it. It is probably the best small car on the market. I would certainly buy another one. I just wish that BMW built a suitable alternative.
Advantages: Light on fuel, easy parking, good on open road. Disadvantages: Small boot space, but the size of the car is what it is.

I bought my Mercedes190E late last year after my trusty and beloved Renault Megane had an altercation with the central reservation of a dual carriageway. Needless to say, the central reservation was victorious.
As I was still paying for the Megane, and was only covered Third Party, Fire and Theft (D?oh!) I needed to find something cheap and reliable, not an easy task!
After scouring the small ads in the local paper, I came across an ad for a 1991 / J Plate Mercedes-Benz 190E for £1800.
I must confess I was dumbstruck ? I had no idea one could procure an actual Mercedes-Benz for such little money, and figured there must be a serious problem with the car.
Nevertheless, I phoned the owner who assured me the car was a diamond, absolutely immaculate and so on and so forth. So, with a little trepidation, I went to view the car, taking ...

Advantages: So smooth, handling, looks Disadvantages: Fuel consuption, reliability
So you may see the 2.6 mercedes190E as a solid, reliable car. You'd be wrong there.
They can be solid and reliable, but only if really looked after. That engine needs 4000 mile oil changes to look after the timing chain, and the head gasket will need doing at around 100k to sort out an oil weep. The cylinder heads are also prone to warping, what with it being a straight 6 that runs pretty hot.
Mine was an ebay purchase, bought off a man I didn't trust in an area I don't like going to. Hatfield in this case.
First impressions. My this car is fast and smooth, ooh that autobox is clunky. Shame the aircon doesn't work. Or most of the electric windows. Sunroof worked, which was a godsend on that hot june day.
Well I thought that I'd be keeping this car for years, because being a mercedes it would be solidly reliable, so I ...
