I bought an SLK 230 Auto without really thinking - I had driven a couple on hire in the UK and a 2000 manual in Germany and was seduced by the smooth power delivery and the way that the hood goes up and down. Before that I had never really thought of myself as a convertible type person - they seem to be so noisy when the roof is up ( 75% of the time in the UK ). But the SLK is the best of both worlds - it's a coupe and roadster in one ! It's only downside for me is the seating which requires the slightly shorter than average ( 5ft 7ins ) driver to 'reach' a bit when requesting full throttle or laying a bit back in the seat. The old style gear shifter on the auto is not too nice either but overall still a great package. Having just driven a new CLK55 with the tiptronic type change ( which is now standard on the SLK ) and sat in the electricv seats (which have a better range of motion ) I would definitely recommend the new SLK ( perhaps the 320 ) and check it out in black !
