After searching high and low through the many on-line car sales websites for a boxter, I widened my search words to 'Roadster' and was surprised at the amount of Mercedes SLK models that were for sale from between £11000 and £15000. I veiwed a couple and 2 days later, bought a SLK230Kompressor. What a car!! The performance is amazing and ride and handeling are just about on a par with the £25000 (2nd hand) Boxter. When weighing up the pros and cons of the 2 models there is not a lot between them except for the residual value. Look at how much 1980's SL mercedes sell for (10k) plus and then look at 1980's porsches. By buying a 1997/98 SLK, servicing it on a regular basis and keeping on top of any problems, you have almost had yourself a free car when you come to sell it, with a hell of a lot of fun in between. To top things off, I was very surprised to find out that the insurance was only £385.00 with sainsburys. The policy was £450 with just me on it and it droped when I added my wife......Just don't tell her that she's on it!!!

You seem to have done your homework well on this one!Congratulations on your SLK230 Kompressor! Any idea about costs of servicing at main dealer or elsewhere? or any reliability issues(yet?) and ease of driving, cornering, visibilty etc. Good on you for choosing Sainsburys Motor insurance I got my insurance with them too on my alfa-beat all other quotes miles off! its actually esure insurance so you would get the same off the esure site. Sorry about the lowish rating, but I agree with the others that have commented. Well written, but detailing some of the pros and cons that you mention would have got you a higher rating from me.
Advantages: GREAT CAR, SUPERIOR BUILD QUALITY COMPARED TO THE BOXSTER I PREVIOUSLY OWNED Disadvantages: BIT MORE OF AN OLD MANS CAR, PERHAPS THAT IS WHAT I AM NOW AT 36?
