Firstly, I just want to say that before I started taking any contraceptive pill I read lots of reviews, and to be honest they scared the life out of me! I suspect that many people with positive experiences don't bother writing reviews.
Basically, at this point in time I really do not want kids so I want a form of contraceptive which is very effective. I have very painful heavy periods so I can not use an IUD. I also wanted something which was going to help make my periods lighter and less painful ( plus something which would help my acne so that I didn't have to take anti-biotics constantly!). So the combined pill seemed like the perfect option ( especially since I'm 24).
First I tried mycrogynon ( the one doctors always give you first it seems), which gave me a constant headache, an irregular heart beat and a rash all over my neck....I stopped taking it after about 7 days. The doctor then put me on Logynon which again gave me a constant headache, pains in my leg, but worst of all I became depressed and for no reason at all...
Long story short I gave up on my doctors as I felt they did not have my best interests at heart. I went to a family planning clinic and saw the head consultant there. He said he knew exactly what I needed and put me on Mercilon ( one of the lowest dose pills). He said based on the side-effects I'd suffered previously it was obvious that the synthetic oestrogen did not agree with me, and that If the low dose pill didn't work I'd have to take a mini pill ( and I didn't want that as I'm awful at taking pills at exactly the same time each day).
I've been taking it for two months now and I am so happy with it. I have no headaches, my boobs are a cup size bigger ( and they don't even ache!). I have no spots. My periods are regular, lighter and less painful. I think I even feel happier taking these. I think perhaps they have balanced out my hormones. Plus with these pills I seem to have less of an appetite ( which is good for me as I was worried about putting weight on if I started taking t he pill.). Best of all it a really effective and reliable form of contraception.
The only side effects I experienced were within the first week of taking them. I had the odd cramp in my leg. I would feel sick if I ate as soon as I woke up. I also got a really itchy eye ( which lasted about a day). All these symptoms went more or less completely after about a week. I think it was just a matter of my body adjusting to the new hormones.
I feel safe with Mercilon.

Review of Mercilon Contraceptive Pill by
londonner
Advantages: Haven't become pregnant yet!
Disadvantages: The "scares" mentionned in the Press
Mercilon is one of the new generation of very low-dose oral contraceptive pills.
It was brought out in 1986 by Organon.
The pill works by overriding the normal female cycle, preventing the release of eggs. This is done by using derivatives of female hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. The derivatives used in Mercilon are Ethinylestradiol (a synthetic form of oestrogen ) and desogestrel (a synthetic form of progesterone)

... ...make me feel depressed, and Mercilon contains a very low dose of this hormone. I have tried other pills before and this one is the only one that works for me.
I assure you that I have never become pregnant, and haven't noticed any side effects. No weight gain, no mood swings, nothing!
So can wear mini-skirts ( not that I do! ), charm the boys and retain my flat stomach... ...

Mercilon - Effective contraception
Review of Mercilon Contraceptive Pill by
emma1984
Advantages: 99% effective
Disadvantages: side effects
Mercilon was introduced by Oragon in 1986. Its a low dose contraceptive. The 28-day regimen consists of 150 microgram desogestret for 21 days and 20 microgram of ethinylestradiol, followed by 7 days of placebo tablets.
You take the pills for 21 days then take a 7 day rest. The disadvantage of this is that you fet 7 days break and you can sometimes forget to start taking the pills again making the pill less effective.
Mercilon contains a small amount ... ...pregnant.
You cannot take mercilon is you ....

Success with Mercilon
Review of Mercilon Contraceptive Pill by
Nutty415
Advantages: Hardly any side effects, happier moods, bigger boobs!
Disadvantages: Water retention and some tenderness with breasts but does fade
I started this pill a month ago and am now on the second pack. At first I was going to consider stopping it as I was experiencing a really bloated tummy and really painful boobs, but I have given the second pack a chance as I know I needed to let my body get use to the hormones etc.... I am very glad I did keep it up because so far on the second pack I have not experienced anything negative other than a small amount of pain with my boobs which I ... ...bloated any more and feel alot happier.
I have tried other pills in the past but have had the same symptons alot of other people have had by the sounds of it. I experienced headaches and was constantly depressed and tired. This one is by far the best and I would reccommend giving it ago even if you feel like you have tried all of the pills and have given up trying. Also be patient with this one even if you feel like giving up on it on the first ...

Newyorker86
Advantages: No major side effects, no weight gain, improved complexion, succesful barrier against pregnancy...
Disadvantages: Hardly noticeable...slight bloating, patches of dry skin
...Microgynon, I was put on Mercilon and what a pleasant surprise! Side effects of Microgynon included acne, a constant headache and severe stomach pains for me so the doctor suggested a low dosage contraceptive...Mercilon.
Mercilon is taken for 21 days and then a pill free week (7 days) is taken in which you have your period. I was informed by the doctor that the pill could help in making my periods both lighter and less heavy and although Mercilon ... ...to low dosage contraceptives like Mercilon and these include headaches, nausea, weight gain, skin problems and bloating. However I can honestly say I haven't witnessed any of these whilst taking Mercilon. The only minor side effects I have encountered are slight bloating which seems to disappear on my pill free week and occassional, patchy, dry skin. As for my weight, if anything I would say Mercilon increases my appetite slightly but I have actually ...
