...Review of Haunted Homes- True Stories of Paranormal Investigations I bought this book from a bargain book shop, having seen the television series and also having a bit of a fascination for such things I decided to treat myself. The first thing you realise is that Mia Dolan, billed as Britain's most famous psychic, is a normal, down to earth person who eats, sleeps and goes to the toilet, just like the rest of us. There are no airs and graces about her, the day to day details of her life, such as what she had for dinner are mentioned along with the fascinating reports of hauntings and how she dealt with them. She isn't a great literary writer, but you can clearly hear here own voice coming through as she writes exactly as she speaks. Advantages: Fun, easy to read, likeable characters
Disadvantages: Some might think it is the same as The Devil Wears Prada...it's not!

...I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this free from Waterstones as a Uncorrected Manuscript proof to review for their website. When I first read the blurb on the back of the book, it sounded incredibly similar to "The Devil Wears Prada" and I was keen to seen exactly how alike the two books would be as I read this particular novel. So here goes my review of "The Making of Mia". This book was written by Ilana Fox, who works for The Sun newspaper. This is her first novel. Ok, well this novel tells us the story of Jo Hill, a young girl whose dream is to work for a national glossy magazine as a journalist, but she is sure her appearance is going to stop her dream from becoming a reality. Advantages: well written and informative, not preach-y or patronising when discussing God and heaven.
Disadvantages: the odd daft comment from Roz, although dismissable since she's new to it all I suppose.

...while though before I spied it and she recalled that part of the reason she had bought it was because she somehow KNEW I'd get as much out of it as she would. The basis of the book is fairly simple in theory, but in practice is a little more complicated as we discover - Mia takes on a student to 'teach' her how to be psychic like her. So was I interested? You bet your ass I was. + WHO'S THIS MIA BIRD? + Mia Dolan, some of you may recognise, as the resident psychic on the ITV2 programme 'Haunted Homes'. My Mum had also gone on to explain that Mia Dolan previously released a well-received autobiography, 'The Gift', detailing her life (awful childhood experience, abusive marriage, and loss of her brother and son included) up until and after the time she realised she had a psychic ability.
