Interesting but not entertaining
Review of The Bible Code - Michael Drosnin by
sjhoward
Advantages: Interesting, fascinating, factually brilliant
Disadvantages: Sounds like an extended newspaper report
...Michael Drosnin is a journalist, and this can be clearly seen by reading his book.
Whilst the book is highly interesting and fascinating, it is only enjoyable in the same way that a TV documentary is enjoyable - not like a fiction book is interesting.
The book attempts to tell the story of how the code was discovered, whilst also revealing what has been found from the code - and the code predicted some very real things that happened. The story of how it was discovered sounds like an extended newspaper article, however, and this is not a book which can be treated in the same way as a novel.
If you do not have a prior interest in this sort of thing, then you will not enjoy this book....

A cure for insomnia
Review of The Bible Code - Michael Drosnin by
jefferson
Advantages: If you're having trouble getting to sleep...
Disadvantages: Mind-numbingly boring; Contrived claims
...I had high hopes when I picked up this book. It had been recommended to me by a couple of friends who found it hugely entertaining and were completely taken in by the seemingly well-founded claims.
It's hard not to feel incredulous when one first looks at the author and journalist Michael Drosnin's astonishing assertions. He claims that the Hebrew Bible contains a complex code revealing events that took place thousands of years after the Bible was written. Drosnin maintains that some foretold events later happened exactly as predicted. The book received a lot of publicity around the time of its release.
Disbelieving, I did a bit of research on the Bible Code before I started reading. It turns out that many articles have been published totally dismissing Drosnin's work. For instance, the Hebrew alphabet has no vowels, so the chances...

Bible Code Unlocked With Our Modern Day Computer
Review of The Bible Code - Michael Drosnin by
lizzy8
Advantages: an interesting read, very well written, and almost convincing at parts.
Disadvantages: the code is a little hard to understand, 'predictions' have been proven to be no more than coincidence
...5 years before writing The Bible Code, investigative reporter Michael Drosnin flew to Israel to meet with chief of Israeli intelligence about the future of warfare. While he was there he met a young officer who told him of a mathematician in Jerusalem, he claimed that this man had actually found the exact date the Gulf War would begin, and he had got this information from The Bible. The mathematician's name was Eli Rips, and he was considered a near genius in his field.
Even with this knowledge, Drosnin was still skeptical, he arranged a meeting with Eli Rips to check out the story, expecting to only be there a short time, what Eli Rips claimed... that there was a code that could tell us the future in the Bible, a code that could be unlocked with the modern day computer, was surely impossible.

2 years later, Michael...
