I recently purchased the Mico 808D DVD player from Sainsburys for the bargain price of £39.99. Granted when it comes to cheap DVD players there are cheaper out there. However they usually don't play Divx movies.
For those not in the know, a Divx film is one that can easily be downloaded using a Peer to Peer file sharing tool such as Kazaa. You can download and watch films before they even reach the cinema and they are mostly DVD quality. However you do not need a DVD writer as the file size of a Divx movie is just the right size to fit on a CD. This is why you need a DivX DVD player to play them as they are essentially Avi/MPG files on CD.
The Mico 808D is a silver, slimline and has a mirror finished front and really looks the part. When you open the CD drawer you can instantly tell that it is not a top of the range DVD player however that isn't why you bought it. The quality of playback is as good as any other and there are many sound output options.
The one disadvantage is that it does not play around 10% of the films I have tried on it. This is probably due to the fact that newer versions of DivX, Xvid etc. are being released all the time along with Ac3 filters etc. This DivX player unfortunately does not seem to have new firmware releases(that I have found on the manufacturers website). Although, I fully intend to ask the manufacturer if there are updates available.
SO my advice if looking for a DivX player that plays all DivX/Xvid downloads is to use one that has upgradeable firmware a similarly priced option is a Roadstar.
Overall verdict, for £40 I will get my use out of it and probably get a newer one that does have firmware releases later in the year. It is well worth the money, looks good, sounds good and would be best suited as a second/bedroom DVD player.
