Very poor experience over the last 12 months with the DX-1. Never reached 48 speed CD burn, usually between 16-24x speed. The printer typically lost register on every other disc and in order to use the MB branded rather than HP ink cartridges there's a barcode on each cartridge that increases the cost from £30 to £50.
Not once did this unit burn 100 discs unattended, it typically varied from 4 to 15 discs, requiring manual intervention due to: a) 'invalid ink cartridge' even though I religiously (stupidly?) stuck with the branded carts. b) sync cache error very frequent burn fault. c) discs misfed in the drive tray, requiring the stack to be removed. d) print transport jumping requiring a restart of the unit.
In spite of running this unit on many different workstations, and with many different media types it never failed to disappoint. When it was returned under warranty, nothing wrong could be detected, and to be fair, when it came back it did successfully burn 20 discs, but then went back to the routine failure. The labelling software (SureThing 4)and the driving software (PrassiTech Zulu) are excellent, but these are only useful when the machine operates as intended.
I wish that I had followed my instinct and bought a separate printer and 4-bay duper. Instead, I have spent *weeks* babying this unit along. To the point where I sit here writing the review - it is alongside me, switched off as I burn discs on my desktop PCs one at a time.
Don't waste your money on this atrocious piece of kit! If you do decide to go here, make sure you invest in the 'microcare and warranty options' - but check those prices, and make sure you take them out when you are still eligible to..
The unit constantly reports ink cartridge low, despite being brand new. Put yet another cartridge in, print 10 discs and INK LOW.
Use printer utilities and it shows a full ink cartridge.
