Well as you all know I am a lady! And I enjoy knitting, embrodiery and elaborate ladies dresses and the sort.Well almost. And being a lady one has ovaries and a womb which need to be just stopped quite frankly producing any eggs and inducing feelings of cluckiness.
My story began at the tender age of sixteen.I had rushed to the Doctors one morning to get the morning after pill.Bad Kitty! Yes it was one of those ridiculous mistakes, wheer I thoughtI was immune to sperm..and that I must have had some sperm zapping device tucked away into my vagina.Well me being the randy naive teenager was sadly mistaken, and with my head hung low mumbled to the Doctor that I needed the morning after pill.
After his eyebrow raising, sharp intakes of breath and generally looking at me like a fallen woman he suggested that I make another appointment so that I could be put on the normal pill.So That I wouldnt have to take the emergency one again.
So then,I teetered off to the quacks yet again and had my blood pressure taken.I was then given my first prescription for Microgynon 30.He carefully explained how to use it,but I did unravell the long instruction leaflet and read all of the fors and againsts for taking such medication. So here is my story....
WHAT IS MICROGYNON30 EXACTLY?
Okay..it is called a combined mini pill. This means that it has two female hormones in each pill, oestrogen and progesterone. These are your sex hormones.I have ach in abundance and now even more! Both of these hormones are released at the beginning and end of your menstrual cycle respectively , preparing your womb for the fertilised egg that may be chuffing along your fallopian tube ready to stick to your womb lining and make you fat and bloaty for nine months. Then a child will pop out.
Whilst you are pregnant these hormones carry on being made to stop any more eggs being released whilst you are pregnant. This is how taking the pill works..
It works three ways to protect you against getting pregnant:
1.No egg is released
2.The fluid at the neck of your womb becomes thicker so that it makes it difficult for any little sperms to get through
3.The lining of your womb doesnt thicken ,so it couldnt actually support a pregnancy anyway.
HOW DO YOU TAKE IT?
When you get your pack of tablets home you will be presented with a box, about half the size of a packet of cigarettes. It is currently green and white in colour.Schering are the product license holder and you have their address on the back. And you should obviously not let any present kiddies that you may have to get hold of them.
The tablets do contain Lactose and Sucrose for those of you who have allergies. Each tablet contains 150mcg of Levonorgestrel, and 30mcg of Ethinylestradiol. These are the fake hormones that replicate your own.
On the end of the box will be the expiry date. Now I got my new pack and the expiry date is April 2010.So they have a very long shelf life indeedy. And these tablets are to be taken by mouth, and not shoved any place else.
On opening the box I am faced with three month strips of small tablets.About half the size of a tictac and a very dull yellow colour. Now pay attention! On the back where you pop the tablet through the foil you havethe days of the week.A great idea,as you know when you need to take your pill.Or if you have forgotten to take it that day.
You will also have a very long information leaflet. But it is for your own good,so I suggest you read it if you have any problems. And if youa er worried go back and talk to your Doctor. As Microgynon will not suit everyone.
If you have neevr taken the pill before, you need ot take the first one on the first day of bleeding of your period. So Take your first pill marked for whatever day it is.You then take the next pill the following day and so forth. So what should happen is that you take the pill for 21 days, and then you have a 7 day break when you have your period.
You need to take the pill with water and at the same time every day.If you follow the above, you will be protected from getting pregnant at once.
If you are swapping from another type of 21 day pill then you just dont have a 7 day gap.You carry on with taking your new pill staright away without having a bleed. This means that you will be protected at once.
There are sections on the info leaflet about when to take the pill again after a birth, miscarriage or an abortion. Now I am not comfortable churning the leaflet to you.So i would advise that you talk to youre Doctor first.I mean you wouldnt have a prescription without him/her.So me explaining it form the leaflet is wasting all of our times!
WHAT IF I MISS ONE?
IF you are more than twelve hours late in taking your pill,or have missed more than one, then you need to use another form of contraception.Just take your late pill as soon as you rememebr and then carry on taking them as normal. If you do this though, you don't have your seven day break. You just carry on taking your pill without having a bleed. This is apparently OK to do.
If you are less than twelve hours late in taking your pill then don't worry. All is well.Just carry on as normal.Even if it means taking two pills in one day.
I did the opposite once and took two pills in one day.I was a little drunk and forgetful that day.It is not harmful, well so the Doctor said. But is might make you feel a bit sick.
YOU NEED TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
Severe Depression Varicose veins diabetes Hypertension Epilepsy The inherited deafness disease Otosclerosis Multiple Sclerosis The inherited disease called porphyria Calcium Deficiency Sydenhams chorea Breast problems Heart Disease Liver abnormality Obesity Intolernace of contact lenses Systemic Lupus Asthma Fybroids Gallstones Migraine
OK..you would probably know already if you had any of these things.I don't even know what some of them are and I'm not sure I want to either. But your Doctor should be able to sort you out before prescribing anything anyway.
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER DRUGS
Some antibiotics stop the pill from working. When you take anti biotics be sure to use condoms or just not bonk,as you are not fully protected. You also don't have a bleed break when you have taken antibiotics. You just carry on taking your pill straright through without having a period. If you are given antibiotics for anything amke sure you ask the DR if they are ok to take with the pill.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
The best thing about going onto the pill is that your menstrual cycle becomes regular as clockwork.I can pin point when I will start mine within the hour! Its always a Thursday night. It will make your flow lighter, and you tend to get less of those awful gut wrenching pains. I hardly get any pains now,and my periods are a tampon absorbency lighter than before I started taking it.I do still get PMT,I want to sit in a corner and gently weep about adverts which are a bit sad. I also get a big fat bloated belly that could double as a life belt. But I no longer have boobs that are solid for five days and are painful to honk.
Taking Microgynon also stopped me from gettin teenage spots.Which was great! The only real side effect that I had was really painful boobs for the first year of taking the pill. They were lumpy and sore. But after the initial year this stopped.
I havent had any irregular bleeding in between periods at all either.I have put on weight, but thats because I eat a little too much cake.man I love the cake!
REPORTED SIDE EFFECTS:
These include nausea, headaches, sore boobies, bleeding in between periods, depression, loss of sex drive (not me,I could hump for England!),changes in weight (Try not to eat too much,as it may increase your appetite),Poor tolerance of contact lenses.
The pill can also increase your likely hood of getting thrombosis which is a blood clot.5 cases of Thrombosis occur in every 100,000 women not taking the pill. Whereas there are 15 cases of Thrombosis occur in women taking the mini pill in every 100,000.So its quite a small risk.Your risk is greater if you are over 35 and smoke.Well thats one for me then.
Taking the pill does also slightly increase the chance of breast cancer. But then it does protect against ovarian cancer. So its a bit of a swings and roundabouts situation.
Just Remember if you have any problems go and see your Doctor straight away.I have to have a pill check every six months.I have my blood pressure taken and the nurse just checks that I'm getting on alright. My blood pressure is good for a smoker apparently! You should have a pill check every six months,as this is considered good practice.
If you think you are pregnant you need to stop taking the pill immediately and go see the Doctor. As it can harm the baby.
MY FINAL THOUGHT...
This pill suits me down to the ground.I havent had any major side effects, not that I can see.And am happy on my cycle.Riding through country lanes...hee hee
I understand that this may not suit everyone..bu there are may other pills out there that you can be advised to take..
