After owning my xbox 360 for a while and playing quite a lot (probably too long) I was getting rather fed up with having to constantly change batteries in my controller as it kept running out of battery. This not only meant I had to go and find some new batteries - and in some instances even meant going to the shop to buy some new ones, but it also messed up whatever I was playing particularly in online play as I would just lose and not be able to play. Normal batteries were beginning to rely annoy me so I decided to purchase a play and charge kit! The xbox controller - being wireless eats up batteries like nothing and this kit is intended to be a simple solution to all those AA batteries.
What is it:
In this play and charge kit you get a battery pack and a USB charger wire. The battery pack is designed to fit perfectly into the battery bit on the back of the controller and replaces the old AA batteries and the cover. It slots in very easily by placing the bottom bit in first and then can be easily removed by pushing the button at the top and it will come straight out. The charger simply plugs into the top of the controller and then the other end (the USB bit) will plug into the front of the xbox or into your computer.
How it works:
At first you have to put the battery pack into the controller and then put the USB in and plug into the xbox or computer and leave to charge for about 5 hours. Once it is fully charged the light on the wire will change from red (charging) to green (fully charged). You will then be able to use your controller for around 30 hours before it will need recharging. The controller can be checked to see how much battery is left by pressing the xbox guide button and in the top corner on the menu on the screen it will show a level of battery in the controller. You will also be given a warning when the controller has 30 minutes of life left as it will flash all the lights around the middle several times.
Of course this kit has so many great benefits as it not only lasts for ages, it also has a relatively short charge time of only a few hours and then gives you up to 30 hours of play. You can also play on it while it is charging and it won't disrupt your game when the controller runs out of battery as you can just carry on playing and it will be like using a wired controller for a short amount of time.
It also saves you on batteries. Instead of having to constantly change and buy new batteries which can cost up to several pounds for only a pack of something like 6 AA batteries. These are also very bad for the environment as they cannot be recycled in the current state of technology so it is best to sue them as little as possible.
Price:
The play and charge kit costs £12.99 from play.com
You can also buy spare battery packs for £9.99 in all colours to suit all the controllers.
This is a great price if you think about the amount it costs you to keep changing batteries and buying new ones. Definitely a saving will be made in the long run.
Conclusion:
A must have for anyone who likes playing on their xbox quite a lot. You won't have to worry about having spare batteries and keep having to change them. You simply plug in the USB and start charging and will be able to play for hours on end without interruption!

Review of Microsoft Microsoft Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit - Battery and charger NiMH
Advantages: Long battery life, easy to use, short charge time. Disadvantages: Yet another wire to get tangled.
It was only recently after I purchased by Xbox 360 system that I realised how much of a nuisance it was to have to switch the batteries in my wireless controller during the middle of a game, especially during multiplayer games. At first I considered buying a wired controller to use instead of my wireless one, but I found this great charging kit instead.
The charger goes straight into the USB port in the front of the Xbox 360 system, whilst the battery ... ...go. It makes no noticeable difference to the weight or the feel of the controller. The controller lights will begin to flash to tell you that you have under an hour of battery life left and that is when you plug in your charger. It only takes around an hour to charge the controller to a capacity that allows for 3-4 hours of gameplay without the lead, and you can continue playing even though the controller is plugged in. You can leave the charger ...

Advantages: Brilliant easy to use Disadvantages: unreliable
I have now bought two of these one of the Xbox versions and a cheaper version. The idea behind this is that the Xbox controller comes with a pack that fits two double A batteries but these are a bit of a waste of time because they run out of power so quickly. When you buy this play and charge kit it has a power lead and a rechargeable battery. The idea is that you connect the power lead to the Xbox by a USB connection and the other end is attached ... ...The Xbox version is definitely a better quality than the other brands but I have had problems with the one I bought. It only charges sporadically and I keep running out of charge. Very annoying! I won't criticise it to much because I bought it at Gamestation, it was pre owned. Unfortunately I didn't keep the receipt so I couldn't return it. The idea is handy and when it is charged up you can disconnect and run it wirelessly, which is a bit more convenient. ...

Advantages: Continue playing whilst recharging your controller, save money on batteries, simple to use, rapid recharging Disadvantages: Wireless controller is a wired controller when using the kit
This is something I purchased only a week or two after buying my 360, and I would consider it essential for anyone who uses the 360 wireless controller. It might cost significantly more than a pack of batteries, but it will not be long before you are saving money, especially if you are a heavy gamer (although I would recommend this product to all 360 owners). The play and charge kit works by having you connect a rechargeable battery pack into the ... ...controller. The external appearance of the normal battery pack and the rechargeable battery pack included in this kit are basically identical and you will not notice the difference btween the two. It also follows the off-white colour scheme of Xbox 360.
Once your controller is beginning to run low on batteries, you are informed of this in two separate ways. Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, the lights around the Xbox guide button of your controller ...

Advantages: Wirless Controlling Made easy! Disadvantages: None
If you have an Xbox 360 wireless controller, you pretty much need a Play and Charge Kit. Find out what it is, what it does, and why you need it right here in our full review.
What It Is
The Xbox 360 wireless controller is a hungry little critter. It eats AA batteries like nothing else I have ever seen. I understand that there is quite a bit more going on than with other wireless controllers, but having to change the batteries every three weeks ... ...going strong for about 18 months and my Logitech PS2 and Xbox controllers lasted about a year before they needed new batteries and I used them a ton. So, after three battery changes since I got the Xbox 360 in mid-November, it became apparent that Microsoft's rechargeable battery pack was the way to go in order to save money in the long term. For a mere $20 you can get you hands on a play and charge kit that should last you a good couple of years ...

Advantages: Charges Pretty Quickly, Allows you to play whilst charging Disadvantages: should perhaps be free with console
The xbox 360 play and charge kit allows you to recharge your wireless xbox 360 joypad whilst you play. It simply plugs into the socket on top of your xbox 360 control pad and into the usb port at the front of your console. The kit contains the usb cable and an NiMH rechargeable battery pack.
It has around 30 hours of play time per charge (enough for well over a week of extended playing!), with each charge taking a few hours to be fully topped up, ... ...be playing your game anyway!
Its definately a handy little device as it saves you having to buy disposable batteries (that the xbox 360 wireless control pad uses as standard) every soon often, thus eliminating any "control pad running out of power" potential gaming disasters that we all fear when anyone mentions "wireless control pads". You can even check how much juice you have left in your battery pack through the fuel gauge on the xbox 360 dashboard, ...
