This review was originally placed before the great Ciao crash of the 26th June 2007 - it disappered and I'm putting it back!
Before I start you need to know that I am a Microsoft Office Master Instructor and as such have been using and teaching Microsoft Office for many years. This means that I tend to look at software in a slightly different way then the average user.
Microsoft Office 2007 is the latest incarnation of this very popular productivity application suite. And it marks a major change in the way that the user interacts with the software.
The most obvious difference a regular user will notice is in the way that the menu/toolbars have been replaced with the "ribbon" this ribbon is in reality just a re-working of the old menu/toolbars but what a reworking!
To start with the ribbon is designed to be more intuitive and it is context sensitive, so what you se in the ribbon changes depending on what you are trying to do.
I must say that as someone that is coming to MS Office for the first time it will be a much easier way into all of the packages in the suite, however if like me you have been around a while you are likely to find it takes a lot of getting used to.
The problem with any re-write like this is that Microsoft have to try and meet the needs of a very wide range of people with very different skill sets, it is often said that over 90% of the users use less than 10% of the packages facilities. What this means is that striking a balance is never an easy task and I think in this case Microsoft have gone more towards the light or inexperienced user.
Whilst I can see why they have done this I do find it rather frustrating at times !!
Obviously all of the things you could do with the suite in it's previous incarnations you can still do in this one, but a lot of them have now got added bells and whistles.
To try and explain this I will take you through the process of creating and formatting a TEXT BOX in MS Word. And to keep it within the realms of most I will only be using menu/toolbar and ribbon actions.
In MS Word 2003
To insert a text box in word 2003 you go to the Insert menu and select Text box. This will bring up the dreaded scratch pad drawing area. You now need to use the mouse to drag out a rectangle that will become your text box.
Once you have got the text box you can then go on and change it's appearance, this is done using the Format menu and selecting Text Box which brings up a dialogue box that will allow you to re-size, colour and adjust alignment properties of the text box.
If you wish you can also convert the text box to a frame so that it can be used as a container for other objects.
In MS Word 2007
To insert a text box in wood 2007 you start by selecting the Insert ribbon. Amongst other items you will be able to see an expandable icon for text boxes, clicking on this will present you with a drop down picker with over 30 ready formatted options, from straight forward plain text boxes to side bars, call out's, quote's and even a circular text box. In reality these are all frames of one sort or another. Selecting one of them places the container into the document along with any formatting that are preset.
This makes for a much quicker task completion and for a novice I can see that it would make life a lot easier.
If you already have text in the document when you insert the text box this is automatically flowed around the text box, so if you want to insert a call-out in the middle of some text it moves the text out of the way without the user having to set it's alignment properties.
If you would prefer to insert a plain old text box this can still be done from the option at the bottom of the drop down pick list and selecting this will allow you to draw a text box into your document just like in MS Word 2003 et-al. The only real difference is that the scratch pad is no longer deployed and so the textbox lands on top of any text that is there and you can manually adjust it to get the text around it to flow as you like.
Other aspects. These changes are present through out the suite and overall Microsoft have brought the look and feel of all the packages much more in line, even the errant database (not in the standard package) now feels more like it's part of the same family.
Perhaps the one application where most people will see the biggest changes are in the spreadsheet Excel. The way that this package has been changed to be more data driven and with much much easier formatting control has to be seen to be believed.
Would I buy it? Yes and not only because you have to
Would I recommend it? Without doubt, if you are new to Office go get it and enjoy, if you are an old hand, just hang on in there it is worth it I promise.
Advantages: You may see the changes immediatly without clicking Disadvantages: From the begining you loose the speed of your work
I have Microsoft Office Standard 2007 on my PC for two months. Software development is my job. In most of the cases I don't need much time to undrestand how some software is working but with Microsof Office 2007 ......
When I saw for the first time Microsoft Word 2007 I was really suprised. I didn't find how to Save my file. Microsoft developed a new conception about their products and I really can't understand why. I don't have time and willingness ... ...is that you don't have the drop down menus. There are eight tabs in which are collected the functions. The tabs are: Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review, View, Add-Ins. Guess where is "Count words" for example.
Unfortunately the name of the tabs are not the same as were the name of the menus and you don't know what is where.
When you want to save your file, you don't click on File and after that on Save but you click on an icon ...

I like the status bar in which you right click and choose the features you want to appear on the status bar.
