I bought my son the Xbox 360 for his birthday in February. I had just mastered using his Wii and knew nothing at all about the Xbox - only the nagging I'd had from my son!!
As a thirteen-year old son with plenty of friends who own Xboxes my son was well aware of Xbox Live - therefore so was I before too long!!
Xbox Live is an online gaming service that makes it possible to play online, using an Internet connection with other players from all around the world. It also gives you the opportunity to download demos, videos etc. In fact it is so good that all thirteen -year old boys who have an Xbox 360 need it - this must be true - my thirteen-year old son told me!!
So after a few days of owning his Xbox we sorted out an Internet connection. We used an Ethernet cable from the Xbox 360, although we do keep meaning to buy an Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter so that he can have the Xbox in his room and stop him hogging the main TV!!
The subscriptions can be bought from Xbox Live on line , Ebay or Amazon. We bought our 3 month Gold subscription from Amazon for £12.96, when we realised how much my son used it when it was due for renewal we paid £34.98 for the 12 month subscription. I know that this sounds a lot of money but I can say that we find it has been well worth it, it has given the Xbox a complete new lease of life and added a new dimension to it.
My son particularly likes the 'live parties' which is where he and a group of his school friends are all on line together and chat through their headphones (I am used to it now, I kept wondering who Jack was speaking to!!) they don't have to be on the same games to take part in the 'party'. He also loves playing his wrestling game on line, the twelve months membership was worth it for the laugh I had last week when my son in our village, his friend in a village 20 miles away were playing with two boys from America. The comments my son was coming out with to the American boys could have caused a diplomatic incident, the language when one of the American's told Jack that 'we Brits' don't know how to play football was unprintable!!
The Xbox Live Marketplaceis a virtual market where members of Xbox Live members to download demos, Arcade games, themes etc and even purchase films to watch on your Xbox 360.
In conclusion, I would defiantly recommend you purchase Xbox live if you own an Xbox 360. I managaed to grab my son's attention long enough for his opinion on it, which was :
'It's cool, you can download some really cool stuff, get more achievements and play with some right weird dudes from all over the world'
So I can't really say more than that can I, I speak not as an Xboxer but as a much harassed Xbox owner's mother, I would have liked to have got some more information about the Xbox live off my son but at the moment he is to occupied getting his 'Undertaker' to beat the living daylights out of a poor Australian boy's 'Great Khali' so I better not disturb him!!!
