If we are surfing on ciao, chances are in one of our hands we have a mouse.
However, not all mice are created equal. Here is a great little bargain mouse that removes a lot of the \"ball\" mouse headaches.....The Optical Wheel Mouse from Microsoft.

Design/Ergonomics.
Nice and contoured to your hand, its symetrical shape and slim sides makes it comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The sloped front and back allows it to sit directly in the palm of your hand without any aches or pains.
Buttons are easy to reach and soft to touch. The slightest click is picked up but its sensors as is a turn of the centrally located scroll wheel.

Usage.
A nice responsive mouse that knows exactly where it is thanks to its bright red LED shining down on its control surface. Its accurate and does not suffer from the \"flicking around\" problems that many mice have when picked up from the desk and moved. Obviously the light replaces the movement ball when tracking its position which means there are less mechanical parts to fail (rollers and ball) and less cleaning and maintenance to these parts as well.
How often did your old mouse lose its ability to operate thanks to debris on the ball and rollers? Point proven.

Connectivity.
Most of us have enough USB ports on our computers to cope with the addition of a mouse and this is the preferred option for connection. However it does come with a handy USB to PS/2 plug converter so you can still connect it to a tradtional computer mouse connection. The benefit of the USB is it can be unplugged and replugged while the computer is on without losing the use of the mouse. No restarts needed!

Drivers/Software.
No software as such but it comes with the intellimouse drivers from Microsoft to help your PC recognise it. To be honest these are quite uneccessary as most computers are able to pick up the mouse without them.

Reliability.
Very good. We have rolled these out throughout the office as people were constantly needing the old Mice replacing due to them losing sensitivity (dirty balls and rollers) and this has proved a cost effective replacement. It has significantly reduced time spent at desks fixing and cleaning. It has also reduced the number of terminal failures suffered by the mice as there are no real mechanical parts to wear out.

Pricing?
You can pick this up for as little as £12 now which i think is a real bargain. Check out www.dabs.co.uk or uk.insight.com for prices. Why buy an older style ball mouse at this price?

Downsides?
Only one would be that it is still a wired mouse. It means you are limited to the range you can use this from the PC.

I prefer wireless, yet it sounds reasonable, probably pick a cheap one up on ebay? x
