Windows 7 - it makes Vista look like a beta
Advantages: smooth, quick, easy to install and use, pretty to look at, simplified for the masses Disadvantages: Vista should have been like this - Microsoft robbed us!
Windows 7 makes Windows Vista feel like a beta. That’s my philosophy. It was my philosophy before I bought Windows 7 and it’s still my philosophy now. That’s where the “it looks like Vista” comments come from. Windows 7 is Vista without all the rubbish. Everything people moaned about in vista is gone (or improved) and 7 is more spangly and all singing and dancing. It looks better, runs more smoothly and is simple to use. You might even say ... ...pleasure to use. It loads more quickly than Vista and is aesthetically pleasing as it does so.
The first thing to note is the ease with which it installed. For those of us brave enough to install our own operating systems (and re-install every so often to keep it fresh), we all know the pain and misery that it can lead too, but I have to say, the Windows 7 install was very smooth and easy. Everything people moaned about in vista is gone (or improved) and 7 is more spangly and all singing and dancing. It looks better, runs more smoothly and is simple to use. You might even say its been dumbed down for the masses. Simplified. It’s a pleasure to use.
Windows Vista was pretty good, faster than XP and less hassle, Windows 7 goes that step further, its nearly a breeze. Much to my delight, Windows 7 even recognised and installed my internet/modem before I had even fully loaded windows! Which was amazing enough as I normally have to battle with the PC to get it working. From format to fresh install probably took half an hour, maximum. Then there’s the fun of installing everything else that you usually use in windows, but because its new, at least you don’t have a 15 service packs and a billion mb’s of updates to download and install. Just a handful. One of the gripes people have/had with Vista is the lack of driver support. Most things didn’t work straight off and required hacked drivers or just wouldn’t work at all! That’s not the case with Windows 7. Everything works smoothly. The drivers for mice, keyboards and other peripherals installed with stupidly insane ease and it even recognised what they were in the control panel. I had to do a little hunting for my sound card drivers, but that was relatively easy.
Other changes are pleasant as well. They’ve re-jigged the loading screen once again and there are now even “themes” in windows that you can change (and download more from the internet). Simple little things. Like selecting one that changes the colours of the task bar, your default system sounds and puts a slideshow style wallpaper on your desktop. Sure you can do most of that in any windows, but it would take a little poking about with the settings, this can be done with one (or two) click(s) of the mouse. Just right click on the desktop, click “personalise” and then choose a theme! Its not all about looks though, there are quite a few new additions to improve your PC experience. The task bar has a new look and windows are popped together in bunches, hover your mouse cursor over it and see what windows are open. Windows media player is updated to a point where it automatically recognised where my music was stored (on another harddrive, not on C in “My music” folder as you might expect) without me even telling it anything.
You might well have seen some of the new features on the adverts. The best is probably dragging open windows to the edge of the screen, they will then “snap” into place and allow you to have two screens side by side without the faffing around of changing the size and trying to align it all yourself. But there are many other simple features which are a pleasure to use. Very simple things like a quick right click on the desktop brings up an options menu – they have now added “change resolution” as an option in that list. So that’s nice an easy. A button on the far right of the taskbar will “show desktop” with one click, another button there allows you to bring up the task manager without hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL.
The UAC controls are still in place, but not as potent or irritating, but that could be because I am used to them? The whole windows theme seems to have a “larger” element to it. The icons, buttons and everything are just bigger, even with a really high resolution. You can however change this in the control panel, if you like things to be small, like I do. The gadget sidebar has been dropped and you can now just drop gadgets where ever you feel like. The slideshow wallpaper has to be one of my favourite features though, you can customise it with your own images to give W7 your own personal touch. Its nice. Yet not system heavy. Windows 7 just feels better in all honesty. Quicker, smoother, Sleeker. I have the 64 bit version of Home Premium installed and that’s all you need on a modern PC. The box comes with the 32bit version for old pcs too though. There is no real need for ultimate. Windows Vista Ultimate had a lot more to offer, but you only seem to need Windows 7 Ultimate if you are a corporation or connect directly to a domain. Just google to see the differences. The average home user, even gamer, only needs Home Premium. Its worth the money too, from what I’ve seen so far. Im sure there’s a lot I haven’t found yet. Just wish my work place ran it too, would make life a lot easier with the snappy features.
Advantages: Works well. robust and resilient, user friendly. Disadvantages: The upgrade took time and needs to be left alone to do its job. Do not interrupt!
...like a different beast and Microsoft had shuffled some of the functionality, but it appeared very slick if cumbersome. The laptop was shipped with 1 gb of ram, and a 1.6mhz pentium processor and it struggled to do anything. After upgrading to 2gb, it was slighlty better, but I was resigned to it being a poor performer. Eventually I added a gadget to display the processor and memory performance to the desktop, and the processor gauge indicated that ... ...class as everyday tasks such opening programs. Dad often assumed things were'nt happening and re-keyed to open web pages and applications, resulting in duplication and even slower performance. Last year I bought a new desktop with a pentium Quad 6600 processor and 3 gb ram, and it came installed with Vista. No discs, but a recovery partition. It worked OK, but I was dogged with niggling problems that I couln't fix - Google Earth returned an error ...

Advantages: Great new toolbar, excellent personalisation, overall brilliant design Disadvantages: Really similar to Vista.
In July, I downloaded the Release Candidate of Windows 7 to evaluate the new operating system and I have to say it's the best version of Windows yet! It surpasses Vista in every way. Windows 7 is not available yet but I'm encouraging all Vista uers to upgrade in October as soon as the software is released. In the rest of my review I will outline some of the key features.
For starters, the toolbar has been changed dramatically. In previous versions ... ...would appear seperately as tabs with the symbols and titles of the programs (with the option to group similar windows together under one tab, such as all the internet explorers open). In Windows 7, the toolbar features the start button (the windows logo), followed by programs pinned to the taskbar and open programs, then the notification area and time/date (both of which have featured on all previous toolbars). In the far right corner of the toolbar ...

Advantages: Easy to use, Aesthetically pleasing, User friendly Disadvantages: Not enough variation from vista, no desktop button
...recent release of the new Microsoft operating system windows 7 many people believe windows vista will be forgotten about with its constant security alerts and lack of user options. The new operating system has many new features which I will run through now. Firstly the new taskbar down at the bottom is a lot easier on the eye as it no longer has any text whatsoever, instead Microsoft have opted to use just the logo of the software the user currently ... ...to lock items to the task bar which is a replacement of the quick launch system in Vista, this simply means that you right click click on the logo of the software you want to lock and click ‘pin to taskbar’ this means that when the program isn’t open it still has an icon on the taskbar and can be quickly opened in seconds. In this picture you can see the msn and word logo are highlighted and Firefox isn’t but it is still on the taskbar, this means ...

Advantages: Runs really fast, Some very good features, any decent machine can run it. Disadvantages: The Price. It looks like vista and it really is just a brush up on the old OS
...7 has been said by Microsoft as being much improved and everyone would be happy with the end result. But is it really better, below is my review of a few sections which I believe is most important and compare it to older versions.
Speed: 9/10
Much faster than Vista. To compare with the Vista OS, on Vista it took around 30 secs to 45 secs to boot up and log me in. Now on Windows 7 it takes 20 - 30 secs to boot up. Shut down is also so much faster. ... ...there is a huge improvement. Also when running programs or browsing the internet you feel like this Operating System is very smooth and just does what you want (most of the time)
Program Compatablilty: 8/10
Most Programs that run on Vista will run on Windows 7 (32-bit) very well. Though (64-bit) has a few problems such as many drivers which had worked on Vista 64 don't work now, but this should hopefully be resolved within the next month.
Ease ...

Advantages: Great performance and beautiful interface. Disadvantages: Perhaps still behind the Mac OS operating system.
...awaited new operating system by Microsoft that aims to take computing to the next level. There has been less improvements made than the change from Windows XP to Vista, however, it is clear that there has been a big emphasis put on ease of use and performance etc. Everything within the operating system is just geared towards 'ease of use' and for that reason I really liked it and would recommend it thoughrally. There have been a variety of features ... ...the main new beneift is the interface. There has been enhanced security made and the home networking etc is now so easy to establish which i just great for a home. I have been trying the RC home premium version and I have to say I really like it, it is available to preorder from places such as Amazon for a most agreable price of £75 for the home edition. I believe that this really represents good value and I could not recommend it more in terms of ...
