To start off with, i downloaded the trial version.

I had an old computer lying about so i put it to use. Installing windows server was like installing xp, easy!

when starting it asks you what the server will be used for. "First server" suited me and thats what i chose. After playing about for a week, i had a compete setup. I was able to login from another computer with the domain and everything, my friend could log in over remote desktop direct to the server, and when i logged in, via remote desktop, all of my documents were linked with my roaming profile so i could access documents and all sorts. Also, it was a good learning experience with active directory. Me being 16 and a geek, i found it very easy to use and i didnt need any outside help to set it up.

I learnt that a standard Pc can be used as a server, no special equipment is required. Once i had it set up i could play about with distributing software to my desktop remotely and i found this experience very valuable to what i want to do in the future. This experience has helped me greatly.

Compared to windows server 2003 small business edition and other additions, i cannot outline big differences apart from name and sometimes price.

Windows server 2008 has been out since, well... 2008. As the latest in server technology, i would advise going for that as long as it is in the budget. Of not then windows server 2003 will support you.
