Are you thinking of upgrading to Vista? good idea, but do your homework first. There are so many versions of Vista available it can get confusing let me help you through the minefield. first let me tell you all about some of vista new features and why its a quantum leap ahead of XP.
1. Clear Intuitive interface.
As far as eye candy goes windows vista is a joy to behold a welcome relief from the monotony that is windows XP. the whole interface is designed to ensure that its easy for novices to use. finally you can look at all the files on your computer in a way that makes sense to ordinary people like us not geeks. You can also browse through open windows in 3D ( i am yet to actually see the point in this) i guess its just a cooler way of scrolling through multiple windows. The windows are also transparent ( Aero ) . this feature is however not available in the Basic edition.
2. Improved security
Security issues were such a big deal with windows XP . Vista Has employed Layer upon layer of security which can get a bit tedious sometimes. It has the new windows Defender which includes a built in firewall and anti spyware which makes it almost unnecessary to buy third party anti virus software. Indeed some Antivirus software 'like Norton antivirus don't even work with Vista. Vista also has enhanced parental controls. You could actual decide how many hours you want you 14 year old to spend on the computer. Or you could completely restrict asses to certain sites.
3. Improved search
This is probably one of the most impressive features and the most useful in my opinion. It works like this. when your computer is idle Vista indexes every word every document every picture, so when you need to search its so easy and super fast it takes virtually no time at all. Honest. lets say you were looking for a programme that you had installed and couldn't find. simply just type the name of the programme (that is if you can remember it) and not only will it find the programme it will launch it almost instantly.
4. Maintenance and Diagnostics
Vista has a user friendly maintenance and diagnostic feature that allows you to 1.Diagnose your own PC problems using the performance enhancement interface 2.Retrieve data on the performance of each of your PCs components 3.Easy to read score based results
Vista will automatically store your performance data and take appropriate action such as searching for solutions on the Internet and telling you when new solutions become available.
All maintenance schedules can be automated . You don't have to lift a finger. and unlike Vista you can easily backup your PC to any media you choose.
5. Sidebar and Gadgets
Gadgets connect to web services to deliver weather information, news updates, traffic maps, Internet radio streams, and slide shows of online photo albums and much much more.
In essence, they can be anything you want them to be and with such a wide variety of options, there will always be something to meet your interests. This is a really cool concept although its not new. Google has had a sidebar for a few years now but that is several light years away from the slick Vista sidebar.
6.Readyboost and Windows photo gallery.
Ready boost is a new feature currently exclusive to Vista that allows you to use your ecternal Usb Pen drive to increase the performance of your system. Honestly i don't know how it works, but i just think its really clever.
The windows photo gallery helps you;
Edit and send picture and movie files without the need of third party software. • Optimise images for email with ease • Use Tags to organise your pictures making them easier to find. You can tag more than one word to each image so it is only saved once but will appear in multiple files. • Clear previewing of files • Supports high definition video, watch your favourite TV shows and movies with up to six times the quality of traditional TV and with full surround sound audio. Vista comes with the powerful media center built in as standard in all versions except for the the Basic version.
In conclusion...... I think windows Vista is really Fast safe and easy to use and a really step ahead of windows XP. The huge number of versions can be a bit confusing so i will try and clarify them a bit.
There are four different versions of Vista that are tailored for specific needs whether they are complex or simple. Choosing between four options is relatively easy when you take into account your day to day usage of your PC. The options available are:
Windows Vista Home Basic Windows Vista Home Premium Windows Vista Business
Basic
Windows Vista Home Basic contains all of the basic features to make your computing experience easier, safer, and more reliable. Even if your existing PC seems to be adequate for basic tasks such as reading e-mail and browsing the web, by upgrading your PC to Windows Vista Home Basic or by purchasing a new PC installed with Windows Vista Home Basic, you will benefit from a better computing experience. (Home Basic edition does not feature the new Aero graphics feature or Windows Media Center.) Windows Vista Ultimate
Premium
Windows Vista Home Premium features all of the best features of Home Basic plus the stunning Windows Aero graphics and Media Center. Navigate quickly between applications using the three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all of your open applications and documents. Organise and play your pictures, movies, videos, and music with Media Center. Create your own DVDs and edit your own high-definition movies. You can even use Media Center to record and watch your favourite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Extend your Media Center experience to your Xbox 360 for the ultimate entertainment network.
Business
Vista Business features Small Business Resources, a how-to guide leading you through everyday tasks and troubleshooting in easy-to-follow, non-technical language. The new Windows Tablet and Touch Technology in Vista Business includes improved handwriting recognition and easier ways to browse documents and programs without using a keyboard. Computers that include Windows Vista Business and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access critical business information even when your computer is turned off.
Ultimate Windows Vista Ultimate is the most comprehensive edition of Windows Vista. It is the first operating system that combines all of the advanced infrastructure features of a business-focused operating system, all of the management and efficiency features of a mobility-focused operating system, and all of the digital entertainment features of a consumer-focused operating system. For the person who wants one operating system that is great for working from home, working on the road, and for entertainment, Vista Ultimate is the operating system that lets you have it all. Vista Ultimate includes all of the features that make it easy to connect remotely to business networks. So when you're working from home, you'll have advanced networking capabilities, such as the ability to join a domain, and support for Group Policy. Vista Ultimate also includes Windows Bit Locker Drive Encryption that provides new levels of protection against theft for your important business data whether you are at home, on the road, or in the office. Vista Ultimate delivers all of the entertainment features available in Windows Vista Home Premium. It includes everything you need to enjoy the latest in digital photography, music, movies, analog TV, or even HDTV.
I think windows Vista is without doubt Microsoft's best operating system to date. Maybe they should work on lowering the price a bit so as to make it more widely available.

Advantages: it looks nice Disadvantages: it is unreliable and unpredictable
...In short I feel that Microsoft has out done themselves when it comes to the cosmetics of Vista, the performance side of things however is another matter.
Performance
Vista's performance is poor at best, Microsoft have spent too much time working on the cosmetic side of things and not enough on the technical side. It is very unreliable and unpredictable, you can't do more than one thing at a time for fear of it spitting it's dummy out and ... ...Opinion
In my opinion Microsoft should have focused on the technical side of things more than they did, in their haste to bring out a new good looking operating system they have given us something which admittedly looks and handles nicely but is seriously lacking everywhere else. I just hope that they will learn from their mistakes when they bring out the next version of Windows, although to be honest they couldn't make it any worse than Vista, ...

Vista Las Vegas Review ofMicrosoft Windows Vista Home Basicby

Advantages: Quite pretty and you get used to it Disadvantages: Probably not to everyones needs/taste
...see what the team at Microsoft had done, but I was never expecting to experience it until a year or more after its release. I'm not the sort of person that would buy Vista, just for the hell of having an up to date computer, it just so happens though that my mum decided to buy a new desktop computer for the house so that the computer literacy of the house could expand further than the under 40's that live here. This computer would come packed with ... ...and create computer viruses, and Microsoft probably aren't doing enough to prevent all this but Vista is a step in a furthering direction. Pretty much whenever you try to install something you won't just get one security warning about something being installed, you'll probably get about five, that you will have to click yes to all of them before you can move forward. This was pretty irritating when I was first setting up the computer and putting ...

Advantages: It looks pretty, Good wireless capability. Disadvantages: Poor Design, Its trying to be too pretty. Compatibility Issues
...you will find out that Microsoft are currently creating there new operating system Windows 7. Many reviews state that Windows 7 is actually going to be the completed version of Vista. Now, sorry if I seem to be mean, but that seems very unusual to me. Windows 7, the product there currently working on is the full version of Vista. So really, we are the beta testers of Windows 7. Windows Vista Home Basic is not a full operating system, its a beta for ... ...the new operating system that Microsoft has in order for us.
The first time I purchased my laptop I bought it through the company I worked for. I had actually book the day off work so when I arrived to pick up my laptop, my Managing Director had already opened up the box and was just about to start it up. He likes his technology almot as much as I. At first it looked very good, sleek design, but we waited and waited, and it seemed like it had already ...

Windows Vista. Review ofMicrosoft Windows Vista Home Basicby

Advantages: Looks good, Lots of different programmes. Disadvantages: Hard to get used too.
Windows Vista Layout: The layout of Windows Vista is very sleek but it is quite complicated to get used to at first! The desktop layout can be changed to a variety of colours to make it more personal to the user, and I think that this is a good adaptation to other Windows programmes. On the main desktop, you can choose to have features such as an anologe clock, the date in bold, and the temoerature in your area, all of these features can be disabled ... ...Windows Vista Programmes: The programmes that come with Windows Vista are 'Voice Recognition', a variety of games, Windows Calender, amongst otheres. The Voice recognition programme lets you speak to the computer instead of having to type and click on what you want to do! The downside is that you have to go through a long winded tortourial, and then to make the voice recognition more clear and accurate you need to 'train' the computer to the sound ...

Advantages: Norton Internet Security 2008 offers solid protection for your desktop Disadvantages: The way that it slows your PC down to a snails pace
...While Symantec's protection is set in stone, the average users experience within Norton Internet Security 2008 could be greatly improved. Not all the features work together, and the program could use fewer system resources. And paying to call support is not really playing fair on their part, as the software is not free in the first place.

SO all in all a great adition to the Symantec family, and easy enough to use even for novices!...
