require large amounts of memory and floating point performance in areas such as mechanical design and analysis, 3-D animation, video editing and composition, and scientific and high-performance computing applications. The performance of 64-bit computing offers advantages in fields such as automobile or airplane design, by allowing engineers to create larger, more complex models. With such systems, engineers can use simulation software to analyze the effects of airflow, stress, and heat on materials of a car or plane, and then study the results to improve product design. Likewise, 64-bit computing is a benefit for digital content creators, including 3-D animators, digital artists, and game developers who can significantly reduce the time spent to digitally render three-dimensional models. In the areas of scientific and high performance computing, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition will aid in oil and gas exploration, seismic analysis, computational fluid dynamics and scientific visualization among other applications. Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) offers advanced security tools and technologies in addition to the latest updates from Microsoft. Windows XP SP2 enables you to defend your systems and information against threats by giving you more control over the security features and tools in Windows XP.

The above requirements are direct from the microsoft website however i feel that it seriously underestimates the memory, in my experience 256Mb is the absolute minimum or you will notice a serious decrease in performance and we are talking painfully slow here! ESPECIALLY WITH 64MB, 64MB WILL LET WIN XP INSTALL AND BOOT (THOUGH SLOWLY!) IF YOU ACTUALLY WISH TO ... ...this version of windows is the one that has finally got a greater change than the numbers or letters after its name! It is however ridiculously priced as are all microsoft OS's and if it wasnt for compatibility reasons i would use only Linux.
Windows XP is far better than it's predecessor Windows ME (discounting win2000 as it is really for networks). It is slightly slower, but has far better visuals and many more features.
Windows XP Professional is built on the core software code used in Windows 2000 and Windows NT Workstation. This code, known as the NT kernel, makes Windows XP more powerful, secure, and stable than Windows Me, Windows 98, or Windows 95. If you’ve used those systems in the past, you’ll notice a dramatic advantage: even if a program crashes, in most cases your computer will keep running. This really is true ctrl-alt-del actually does something now!
Windows XP Professional has a fresh visual design with its cool blue and green taskbar and a wonderful new start menu, it is far better than the old simplistic one! The most frequently used applications are shown first. When you open multiple files in the same application, the open windows will be listed together under a single task bar button. I do however find this to be quite annoying and I have turned it off, my parents like it though.
Support for burning CDs on CD-R and CD-RW drives is integrated into Windows Explorer making things much faster when it comes to making cds, you can simply drag and drop nero is now obsolete, though you may wish to use it for specialist cds (multi-session, VCDs etc.)
After a set period of time, or on demand, Windows XP will save memory to disk, and shut the power down. When power is restored, all the applications are reopened exactly as they were left. This was included in Win ME but is still worth a mention for win 98 / win 95 users.
Remote Assistance enables a user to share control of his or her computer with someone on a network or the Internet. An administrator or friend can view the user's screen, and control the pointer and keyboard to help solve a technical problem and the feature can be enabled or disabled. This is great for solving problems, for example, my grandma had a problem sendind e-mail messages last week so she sent me a remote assitance invitation I accepted and i could then control her computer using my computer, she could watch what i did and then she knew what to do in the future. I also changed a few settings for her which she would never have been able to do on her own.
The System Restore feature is supposed to enable users and administrators to restore a computer to a previous state without losing data. System Restore automatically creates restore points which allow you to restore the system to a previous time, occasionally! I am yet to have this feature work succesfully and I have used it 7 times, it normally restores sucessfully but it rarely fixes your problem. Windows ME came with this feature and it hasn't improved at all. This is the one major fault with this OS.
The firewall client that comes with windows XP is ok but I would strongly reccommend installing a third party one instead as it is not very customisablr and tends to create more probs than it solves.
The minimum specifications for windows XP are:
PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space* Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor CD-ROM or DVD drive Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
The above requirements are direct from the microsoft website however i feel that it seriously underestimates the memory, in my experience 256Mb is the absolute minimum or you will notice a serious decrease in performance and we are talking painfully slow here! ESPECIALLY WITH 64MB, 64MB WILL LET WIN XP INSTALL AND BOOT (THOUGH SLOWLY!) IF YOU ACTUALLY WISH TO USE YOUR COMPUTER AND DON'T HAVE HOURS TO SPARE WATCHING IT LOAD APPLICATIONS THEN GET MORE MEMORY ESPECIALLY FOR GAMING!
If, like me, you have few old dos apps and or games you wish to run Win XP will probably not like these, it does have a compatibilty wizard but this does not always work as the NT architecture is very different to 95/98/ME.
Overall I would highly reccommend this to anybody with a 300Mhz CPU or faster and 256Mb of memory or greater, this version of windows is the one that has finally got a greater change than the numbers or letters after its name! It is however ridiculously priced as are all microsoft OS's and if it wasnt for compatibility reasons i would use only Linux.

Microsoft have gone into a lot of trouble to stop people from making illegal copies of this software by putting an activation policy into it, whereby you not only have to have a valid product key, but you also need to connect to Microsoft's server and register your copy directly. If you wish to upgrade your existing operating system to Windows XP, then you can simply insert the Windows XP CD and follow the onscreen instructions to begin the installation. This is the easy way out for less computer literate users!
I would recommend that XP be installed from a freshly formatted drive. The XP CD itself is 'bootable', which means you ...

...Help and Support from either Microsoft or other areas ( will explain ) is brilliant. If a problem occurs with a program etc, your PC will reboot ( no dreaded Blue Screen Of Death ) and send a report back to Microsoft about the cause of the problem and what occurred. To do this you need a "passport" - fancy name for a hotmail login usually. Microsoft aim to diagnose these reports and supply a remedy within 48 hours and usually do so. ...fundamentally unstable with many bugs Microsoft never managed to iron out. For those of you technically minded, industry watchers accused Microsoft of cobbling together ME from earlier versions, such as Windows 98, by importing code rather than re-writing the system. Windows XP is a complete re-write and overhaul with a slightly modified interface compared to Windows 98 and ME. You have complete flexibility controlling the way your desktop looks, sounds, etc. Microsoft has done a good job revamping some of the Accessory ...
