Windows XP Prfessional is an OS which works equally well for novices, enthusiasts and corporate users. True it has got a bit high system requirements like a Pentium II-300 or upper, at least 1.5 GB free HD space and a RAM of 128MB or up word yet I would say it is a necessary upgrade from Windows 95/98 or even for that matter from NT/2000. It’s far more reliable much faster, safer and when you get used to it, very user friendly. Installation is easier and takes 39 minutes if you full fill the system requirements. The best part is that you have whole range of features which are really very help full.I really liked the fact that my digital camera can be directly hooked up into it, the expirence is worth the time spent even the movie maker, for that matter with it own movies can be created with video clips from the handy cam and to top it all the OS is very software friendly. Even system crashes is far less frequent with Windows XP Professional. It has overcome the unfriendly interface woes of Windows 2000. The best of it is that disk partitioning and formatting the HD has become much more easier with XP which means in case your OS gives you problem, even a reasonably eloquent user can reload or even format or partition the hard disk just by reading the massages properly, in fact the option for formatting individual drives are there. The backup option is great. Create a back up of your files and remove all the partitions then format and recreate your disk partitions to your requirements. I think it's one of the safest OS when you're online with continuos software and security updates from Microsoft, it's avisable to upgrade the ie to ie 8 for best surfing experince. To my mind ie is the safest browser with its warnings about unsafe and unreliable sites. If you plan to use it with a net connection please keep your security update option and firewal on. You will be safe, atleast you will know when you are under threat from from terrorist of the net, the malicious viruses. Addendum: 1.Upgrading to Service Pack 3 or above is just a few clicks (Please the system requirements while upgrading, its not the same as SV 2) otherwise you will land up with a very slow PC. 2. Don’t bother about the pop ups, some times annoying but just start using it in a few hours the solution to block them will come to you. Just a bit getting used to is required!! 3. It is equally good for laptop so don't worry. I would prefer XP any day, keeping in mind Vista (at its present stage).

(+) Faster, good networking with other Windows machine, so far it has not crashed. (-) price, best to do a fresh install which will involve backup & restore of information

Interesting but I'm baffled by your saying it has 'high system requirements', as the requirements for Vista are far worse! As an IT engineer I would definitely not say Internet Explorer is the safest browser, and I don't get what you say about dual booting being a problem - I have a laptop running XP Pro and Windows 98 and it dual boots with no problem! You simply have to format the Win 98 partition with FAT32 rather than NTFS, because Win 98 can't read NTFS.
