It comes with software to install allowing you to make full use of the intellipoint. This is a system which allows you to use the scroll wheel both up and down but also side to side by clicking on it.
The scroll wheel is most useful especially for scrolling through documents ... ...set up by plugging in the receiver into a USB socket on your PC but believe it may also work with MAC computers too.
The mouse itself takes 2 AA batteries.
The batteries last several months with daily useage as when the mouse isnt in use it goes into a hibernation mode reducing the battery useage.
I would say that on average i am getting over 6 months use per set of batteries less if i use one of the cheaper brands. more

The range it works at varies on the amount of battery power left but it is certainly 8 foot or more. I use a corded keyboard so not sure if there would be interference if 2 wirelss products were being used at once.
It fits nicely into your hand and would be suitable for both a left or right handed person. My version is a light blue and clear colour but i believe other versions are available. Being optical it can be used without a mouse mat but i prefer to use one. The sensitivity can be alter via the software or using the PC's in built software as it is recognised as soon as you plug the USB cable into the computer. It reacts quickly so would also be good for game players too.
I would recommend this mouse as i have had no problems with it so far in all the years i have owned it. Im not sure how much I paid for it but i think it was in the region of £20-£25 but shop around for the best deals.
