Advantages Extended warranty.
Disadvantages Poor support handling, repair lasted a couple of months.
My Xbox 360 was originally repaired in September 2007. When it came back it seemed to work o.k. It was not until my kids got some new games last Christmas, that the Xbox was played with for any length of time.
Within 2 days the Xbox started given the audio video error (all red lights lit). After buying a new AV lead, the same error flashed up then quickly turned to the 3 red lights error (the so called ring of death.). During this episode the Xbox also chewed up 2 new games. We were not very happy, especially as games are so expensive!
I waited until after the holidays to contact Microsoft, to get the Xbox repaired. 3 phone calls and 2 emails later, I am still waiting for Microsoft to send me, via, email, the shipping labels. Microsoft have offered me a new controller by way of compensation but I will not be rushing out to buy the Elite or any other Microsoft console or games software.
Our old original Xbox was an excellent machine and is still running today (it was given to my nephew.). Why oh why did we 'upgrade'.

Welcome to Cia- I was in Game recently and 2 people were bringing back their XBoxes for similar issues.
