...the Farnborough Airshow, which like the Motor Show is a bi-annual (even years only!) event. What got us there this time? Well, a combination of factors really, prime amongst which was my wife's desire to attend her first ever "proper" motor show. Secondarily, being the skin-flint that I am, a two for the price of one ticket deal, thanks to "BusinessCar" magazine, proved an added incentive. BUYING THE TICKETS We purchased ours via the Internet and printed them at home. You can buy them at the gate, but the chances are that you will be queuing to do so. Not much use at this stage me telling you the price of the Preview Day tickets; that took place last Wednesday - 23rd July. Weekday tickets are £10.00 each, weekend tickets £14.00. ...I had a budget of £5,500 and was looking for a second hand car. I travelled around a lot of local car dealerships to get an idea of what I wanted to buy and how much I ought to pay. I found a Daewoo which was about 4 years old with a reasonable mileage for £4000. I decided that this was the car I wanted but before I bought it I checked the internet for similar cars. I found the Motor Nation site and a pre-registered Daewoo with 11 miles on the clock for £5499. I telephoned to check that it was stil available and placed a £250 deposit there and then. I checked the Daewoo site to compare prices of a brand new car and the one I was buying, the brand new one was £8295. .... Even the motor dealers have these checks carried out before they put a used car on their forecourts, so if the experts can get caught out what chance have you? CUT & SHUT CARS: Not so common now but still a worrying situation. These are cars that again have been written off, usually two models of the same make, one damaged at the front and one at the rear. The fraudsters make one complete car out of two and join them very professionally in the middle. They use the original chassis number from the front car along with the registration number, falsify documents and sell it on the open market. When you look under one of these cars you will see a joining seam running the width of the car in the middle section of the body, that is what they call a 'cut and shut' car.
