Midnight has everything that makes great a chiller: strange goings on in a idyllic small town; shifty, closed-mouthed locals; weird creatures roaming the night; the FBI; a girl on the run from her parents; a mad scientist; and a dog. Sounds like too much to fit in and make sense of, but Mr Koontz encompasses all this and more into a thoroughly enjoyable read. The tale opens as Janice Lockland takes a night time run through the town of Moonlight Cove and along the beach. She hears strange noises and movement flickers at the edges of her vision.... and then she is attacked. The local police (somewhat reluctant to investigate properly - aha, a clue!) classify her disappearance as suicide, but her sister Tessa knows better and arrives in Moonlight Cove to find out for herself. Add to this the extremely strange behaviour of certain local residents and you have the perfect setting for murder and mayhem.

This was the second Dean Koontz book I read, shortly after the fantastic "Lightning" (see sep. review) and, although totally different from the aforementioned book, I began to see where his style was "going". He takes the most bizarre circumstances and collections of people, and turns them into gripping novels that WORK!
