Advantages: A wonderful example of Laymon at it's best. Disadvantages: This could too shocking for some. Don't let your grandmother near this.
There have rumours surrounding RichardLaymon for a number of years now - people think that Laymon is a pseudonym for an established author, perhaps, Stephen King himself. ?Midnight?sLair? is one of the books that fuel this debate. It was originally published under the name Richard Kelly and it is also one of the more extreme Laymon books. Take note, Laymon?s books tend to be twice (or even thrice) as gory and risky than your average horror book and so Midnight?sLair really is a blood bath above the rest.
The story really is typically Laymon. It deals with the bestial side to humans and human nature. It is almost tempting to sound something of a H. P. Lovecraft comparison here. Lovecraft has written a number of short stories in which humans, trapped over a long period of time (or who have voluntarily retreated from the world) have ...
Advantages: Good start, amusing characters, fairly tense at times Disadvantages: Unconvincing story and ludicrous plot twists
One day while scanning the shelves of my local library I happened to discover this horror based novel, which boasted that Stephen King had said 'If you've missed Laymon, you've missed a real treat' on the front cover. Well, I took the great mans advice and took it out for a couple of weeks. Was King serious? Probably not, no.
After Midnight centres on a character called Alice who, after her friend Serena goes away on holiday with her boyfriend, has a nice big house all to herself. It quickly becomes apparent how paranoid Alice is being in a large house on her own (although nobody is forcing her), as much of the side of the house is made of glass, so people can see in (or out, if you look at it that way). Things are about to go pear-shaped for Alice as she discovers a naked stranger swimming in the pool. He wonders towards the house ...
Advantages: Some strong characters - good storyline Disadvantages: Bit predictable
After all my reviews of children's books I thought I would try writing one for the adults out there. This is not one to read to your little kiddiewinkles.
***The Author***
RichardLaymon died on Valentine's Day, 2001 at the age of just 54, but as with a lot of authors he had finished works available and this is one of them. He wrote over 30 novels as well as even more short stories. His genre was horror and he was well known for lots of gory bits in there as well as a lot of sexual experiences too. After all sex and violence sells, especially when it's accompanied by a good story. That's one thing that stands out with his books is that there is always a good storyline in there and it's not just gratuitous mentions of gore and assault.
He is published in the UK by Headline who also publish many other great authors such as ...
A nice gripping and readable novel ; A terrific tale of survival ; Very atmospheric ; The characters thoughts and feelings are projected well to the reader
Suddenly stops flowing towards the middle ; King can be slightly over obsequious towards the main character (*)
The writing is taut and effecive, and several stand alone scenes are magnificent. The conclusion, had it been published as a stand alone novella, would have been wonderful.
Nothing happens, and there is some nasty use of forced incest as a means to create a tawdry shock. Oh, and nothing happens. (*)
