Our very quiet Bosch Aquasensor, which was about 8 years old, suffered an expensive PCB failure, so, rather than have it repaired, we decided to buy a new washing machine. We looked at the selection available in John Lewis, and most of them had large knobs sticking out of the front. As we have a fairly small kitchen, this was not what was wanted. We were intending to replace like for like, i.e. the equivalent Bosch to ours, but they just did not seem to be as attractive, in looks and quality, to the one we were replacing.
After some time, an assistant came over and told us that the Miele Paragon Plus (at £799) was probably the nearest in quality, and came with a free ten-year parts and labour warranty. Not only that, it did not have a large knob sticking out at the front! It is also AA rated. We happily paid, on the basis that, at £79.90 per year, the guarantee itself was worth the money.
Installation was simple, with the transit bars which need to be refitted to move the washer, after removal, being stored on the back of the machine. The drain needs to be fitted, together with the cold water supply only and electrical connection. Levelling is effected by unscrewing the adjustable feet. Access to the filter, and the emergency drum door release, is done with a lever which is stored on the back of the front panel of the detergent drawer. The washer has nine programs, ranging from the "express" at 30 min, to automatic at 1hr 18min. Add to this the soiling options, of heavy, normal and light, together with the water plus option to increase the water level, The temperatures can be manually adjusted down from the maximum permitted for each cycle right down to cold, as can the spin speed (max 1400). There is a buzzer to tell you when a program has finished, but this can be turned off. The woollens cycle and the silk cycle emulate washing by hand, and the timer delay (for washing at cheaper electricity times) can be set for 30 minute intervals. There are certain "programmable" functions, where certain wash programs can be set for your convenience, eg, a lower default spin speed, or removing the pre-wash from heavy soiled programs. It can be very complicated.
The wash quality is what I would expect from such an expensive machine - very good, even on express mode. My son plays rugby, and trains three times a week, so we need a quick turnaround from the washer. It copes very well. There are some nice touches to this machine - the buzzer can be completely and permanently silenced, except in emergency, the detergent dispenser appears to be "Teflon" coated, so the powder does not stick, and it has a larger than average drum door aperture.
Miele guarantee this washer for 10 years. They will also keep spare parts in stock for a minimum of 20 years. The washer is updateable via PC, if there are any changes needed to its cycles. I have no hesitation in recommending this washing machine, especially if you can get the free 10 year warranty.
