Advantages: Probably the most thorough and arguably one of the best written magazines available. Disadvantages: Not the cheapest...
...Surely the leading magazine for those who like 'proper' motorcars. While the likes of CAR, Autocar & Top Gear deal with the new market and the specialist ones delight in pure performance, customisation or are single marques, specials, Classic & Sports Car is the purist's choice. It really does hold something for everyone. There are pre-war Alfa Romeos, Art Deco Rolls Royces, 'woodies', even a steam driven engine more than a century old; There are period group tests, expert advice on maintenance (much of which is of relevance to modern cars) and there is a veritable mine of information from specialists in every concevable discipline from bespoke body fabricators, workshops that deal with only steering racks to upholsteriers and engineering wizards. This magazine provides a riveting read unrestricted by the fashion of the day and can (and...

Advantages: vast database of figures Disadvantages: much unchanged from month to month
...To call What Car? a magazine seems a little unfair - it is in fact a giant tome of motoring statistics published monthly.
As a car buyers guide it has reasonable coverage fo the months new entrants to the UK car market, and three or four road tests or group tests along with a couple of features on safety or car security etc.
The strenght of this magazine is its impressivly in depth and well laid out facts and figures listing.
Every new car is listed detailing price, equipment, performance and economy. The databse of information is vast and accurate.
However much of the detail is unchanged month to month so the regular purchase seems expensive at over £3 a copy.
This magazine serves as a good reference for someone looking to purchase a new car who wants background before vising the showrooms or as a bi-annual purchase for the car buff,...

More like the Yellow Pages than a magazine, although I’d just add that a lot of pages are advertisements and most aren’t even cars. It’s not a unique magazine as some of the cars they test, also appear in other mags, but it’s interesting to see the different opinions of other motoring journalists too, as they try to praise...
