Robin Cook - "Master of the medical Thriller".
When this book turned up as a notorious editors choice from my partners bookclub it was too late to return it so I took it off his hands. I have been hooked on Robin Cook ever since and have been converted from Jackie Collins type books and Autobiographys. I did think that medical thrillers might be a bit over my head and hard to get into. Not the case - or am I becomming an intellectual :-).
Priced at £5.99 for a paperback the back cover says: "Their aim: absolute control of the medical profession. Their method: destruction of the mind..."
In the book we start by reading an article telling us how fetal research was banned in the US on 12/7/74 by President Nixon. Our main character Jason Schonberg and his girlfriend Jennifer are then introduced. He is a medical student who has to quit his course in order to provide for the baby his girlfriend is expecting. Against his better judgement and eager to maintain links to medicine he joins the lead pharmaceuticals company Arolen.
Believeable so far but now it starts to get a bit wacky. Jason quickly learns that doctors go to Arolen's boat for conferences and come back brainwashed. They then change their practices and encourage pregnancy terminations after planting doubts in patients minds. If the tactic doesn't work then they prescribe the new wonder drug for morning sickness to bring on a miscarriage. All this for experiments on embryos. Jason turns a blind eye until his wife is prescribed the drug.
I shan't give the plot away but Jason then has a race against time which had me turning the pages of the novel quicker and quicker.
I usually buy my books from a bookshop but as I'm buying more and more I thought I'd buy some more Cook titles and have recently bought each book for £1 at an amazon.co.uk auction - but thats another story.
Advantages: Fascinating story of medical gene manipulation Disadvantages: Could it be true
...indicate an organ transplant.
DR. JACK STAPLETON; Another Assistant Medical Examiner who teams up with Dr. Montgomery in finding information about
illegal organ transplants. Together they begin a long, arduous search.
As stated before, I do not like to give all the details of a book or a movie. This 456 page book about transplant surgery and animal research is so thrilling, it could be true. The book also contains a glossary defining the medical terms used in this book. Any one who enjoys suspenseful books, and books by RobinCook will be glued to this one as well.
