I bought the Dimage 7i with an extensive kit from a US supplier - the savings available are large, although you WILL pay the customs charge (believe me !)
Having used it for 6 months or so, it is quite simply the best sub £1000 digital camera I have ever used ! For the amateur, the simple point-and-click automatic functions will have you taking stunning pictures from day 1. The more experience you gain, the more you will find the camera can offer you with a mind-numbing number of adjustments available. Even the semi-pro photographer will be satisfied with the features available - this is one camera that will be support you no matter what your level of expertise. Coupled with a good photo quality printer and you will be producing breathtaking prints in no time.
So, its perfect, go out and buy one?
Well.... On the negative side, the battery consumption is something that has to be seen to be believed - don't even think about using non-rechargeables and even the lower power rechargeables (under 1000mA) are a waste of time. Most of us can get by with 3 or 4 sets of high power batteries, but the more serious photographer may have to invest in a batter pack (not cheap at £150+). The layout and configuration of the dials can lead to some interesting contortions if you are looking through the EVF - but you do get the hang of it, eventually. The introduction of the replacement Dimage 7Hi confuses the issue - the new model is undoubtably better equipped and the software is improved, but enough to justify the £950 price tag.... I think not. If you are keen to buy right now - no question, go for the 7i as there are some great bargains out there. However, if you can wait 6-9 months, the 7Hi will (eventually) drop in price and it may be worth seriously considering the new model, especially if you are after "the Best".
