This is a great camera, classed as a "prosumer" it falls between a full on digital SLR and a consumer digital snapper.
It's ideal for someone who wants to move on from their first digital camera to something that gives more control over the end picture.
Sensor The 5 mega pixel sensor is good for high quality A4 prints. The sensor also has an "anti shake" feature that really does work and I found gives you effectively one more stop.
Lens The good quality 7x optical 28 - 200 mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens allows the camera to be used for most type of work from indoors to sports activity. The only lens drawback I noticed was that its macro capability is somewhat restricted.
Battery The battery last for ages, I never managed to run it down between charges.
Exposure control I found the camera to have good accurate white balance and with a shutter speed of 30 seconds to 1/16,000th of a second, well capable of almost any kind of shot.
Speed Start up time is quite quick but there is a significant lag between pressing the shutter button and the picture being taken. Just enough for you to lose that expression or moment of action that you'd been waiting for. It seems that the only way of overcoming this is to upgrade to a £1,000+ digital SLR.
Noise I wouldn't recommend this camera be set at much more than 400 ASA as noise becomes apparent.
Viewfinder The Electronic Viewfinder is limited to only 235,000 which makes for difficult fine focus control
The A1 will work in RAW mode and its results although slow to record are of a very high quality.
Overall it's a great camera and a good next step from your first digital experience.

Advantages: As easy or as advanced as most people need Disadvantages: not a DSLR
I have had this camera for over a year now, and have taken loads of pictures with it. It has taken some excellent shots.
I have cropped and printed photos on A4 paper and they are excellent. 95% of the time the focusing is spot on, but sometimes it fannies around trying to get a lock, but then I am mainly taking pics of my children!
I have still yet to explore all of the features on it, but it has enough to keep most people happy, I am and I used ... ...is cracking, the zoom range covers 99% of the situations I shoot.
The flash is good, but I use the 3600 HSD on it, the wireless flash is great.
My main niggles with it are the limited continous shooting, the manual focus is hard to see if you have the image in focus.
But overall I recomend this camera to all users.
Tips for best photo's, only shoot in RAW, then process the image in photoshop. ...

Quick review of Minolta DiMAGE A1
From day 1 I kept loosing the rubber bits which covered the holes.
Image quality is good, but time to write the image was amazingly slow. If you took 5 photos in RAW continuous mode then had to wait over a minute before the camera could be used again.
Amazingly sturdy design though. Once got caught on the dog's stick and got thrown about 20 meters. Still worked afterwards. ...

...as the consumer reviews. Minolta has a great reputation as far as customer service is concerned which was a very important consideration to me. Before buying, you can even download the manual from the minolta website and study all the features that this camera provides. I also chose this camera because it is considered difficult to use by the amateur, this is what I was looking for, a camera that can keep me interested for many years to come. This ...

I have bought this camear about 2 years ago and I never had a single problem with it.
I have printed images as big as A4 size without compromising quality, which is actually excelent. This camrera is a good choice for someone looking for the transiction between a compact digital camera and a digital SLR beacause it is fairly easy to use, it has good advanced features and manual settings to allow creativity, the flexible viewfinder and LCD screen, ...

has a real mechanical zoom ring, not an electronic one like on the F707/717. As I mentioned, Sony labels the focal range in 35mm terms on the lens barrel. The zoom ring has a nice feel to it, reminiscent of the lenses on my SLR.
I'd rather compare the F828 with other fixed-lens cameras, like the Canon PowerShot G5, Fuji FinePix S7000, MinoltaDiMAGEA1, Nikon Coolpix 5700, Olympus C-5060WZ and C-750UZ, and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ10. When you do that comparison, the F828 comes out on top in almost all areas, including resolution (unless you count the S7000's 12MP mode), focusing, performance, gimmicks (Nightshot and movie mode), and build quality. The F828's lens is stunning, as well. The dual memory card slots support both standard CompactFlash, as well as Sony's pricey Memory Stick Pro cards. Battery life is excellent.
