I was bought this camera as a present and I was amazed at its quality for a 2 million-pixel camera - the photos are of a great quality.
This camera has 3 settings of picture quality, fine, standard and economy. There is little difference between fine and standard but I wouldn’t recommend economy unless you really want to take loads or haven’t expanded on the memory card it comes with (8mb)
The zoom is 3 times optical and 4 x digital zoom. The optical is particularly impressive as it is an internal optical zoom, bending the light within the camera rather than having to wait for a lens to pop out. The zoom is easily operated through the central navigation button. Digital zoom is just magnifying the picture you have rather than improving the quality up close.
Taking the photos can take a little getting used to. By holding the shutter button half way down the camera will beep if the image is in focus, if it isn’t a red light appears but I have found the images are often still fine in that situation. You then push the shutter button down fully to take the photo. There is no viewfinder on the camera but I have found seeing the image you are about to take on the screen is good enough.
You really should buy rechargeable batteries if using this camera as like most other digital cameras it eats them up very fast and a bigger memory card is a recommendation particularly if you want to take fine quality images.
The camera comes with a USB cable and another cable that allows playback through a TV. I used the USB cable to connect to my computer and it works straight away with Windows XP, (Plug and Play) You can upload the pictures to your PC through the software or directly as if you were retrieving the data off a disc (I find this method preferable as it is quicker) The image manipulation software that comes on a disc in the camera is poor, only useful for turning the images around really so I would recommend opening the images in a better photo package if you intend to do something with them.
Within the camera menu screens you can lock, slideshow and rotate, You can also take pictures on top of ones you have already taken, making it look like a collage and you can add audio captions to your photos. The camera does have the ability to take video footage with sound, but not at very good quality and it drains the batteries and memory very quickly.
The camera automatically shuts down if not used for a while. If you want there is an option to imprint time/date data onto the image
Do not be scared by the instructions because as usual the latter of them are taken up with other languages. The instructions are marvellous. I didn’t have any problems getting to grips with the cameras functions and using them. One problem was that in my copy at least the pages were numbered wrong.
