I have owned the Dimage Z1 for about a month now after considering various options.
I decided to buy the Dimage Z1 based on reviews by other people and the excellent spec and I am very pleased that this is the camera that I chose as it is easy to use, comes with a full instruction manual and can be used both as a “point and click” camera or can be programmed in different ways including shutter priority and aperture priority.
The camera is connected to a computer using a USB 1 cable (supplied) and comes with driver software if you are using Windows 98. However, no software is needed if you’re using Windows ME, 2000, XP home, XP Pro or the Macintosh operating system. It is easy to transfer the
pictures to your computer as the camera becomes a new drive on the pc and you literally copy and paste the files to your hard drive. These can then be edited using any software and printed on your inkjet printer or stored back on the card for taking to a shop that prints digital photos. They could even be sent to one of the many online companies that prints photos too.
The camera has 2 modes when recording pictures – you can either use the built-in 2.5in monitor or you can use the viewfinder. Both options show the “actual” picture from the lens so that you know exactly what you are taking.
Using the auto modes you simply point the camera at your subject, press the shutter-release half the way down and the camera will automatically focus, choose the shutter speed and aperture etc. After a second or so the camera confirms it is “ready” and you press the shutter-release all the way down to take the picture.
You can instantly view the picture you have just taken by either keeping your finger held down on the shutter-release or by pressing the “Quick View” button to see it on the monitor.
In addition to the “Full Auto” mode there are also some other “auto” modes and these are
-Portrait – to produce warm, soft skin tones and a slight defocus of the background -Sports action – The camera continually re-focuses to capture high speed action such as a race -Landscape – for sharp colourful landscapes -Sunset – To produce rich warm sunsets (You should not point the camera toward the sun for long periods as this can damage it) -Night portrait – This is used to capture night time scenes where you need the shutter to stay open longer. For example, I recently used this on a trip to Florida at Epcot where I took a picture of my friend and used the mode to capture the background as well – the background being the globe at Epcot. The camera coped fairly well, but really you need a tripod for this sort of picture as it is quite sensitive in this mode if you move resulting in a blurred picture.
The camera also has a video setting which can capture a 640 x 480 movie with sound. I haven’t really used this feature as I prefer to use my camcorder for movies as it produces a higher-quality image.
The camera uses 4 AA batteries and it does use these quite quickly although you can cut the time down it takes to use them by using the viewfinder instead of the monitor. I would recommend either buying rechargeable batteries or investing in the separate “battery pack” that Minolta produce for this camera. My first set of batteries lasted only a week but they were the “cheap” ones supplied with the camera and I was “playing” with the camera a lot finding out it’s features so this is probably why!! I have since bought some Duracell M3 batteries and these have lasted a month so far and I have used the camera fairly often in that time.
The camera comes with a 16mb Secure Digital (or SD) memory card and at the camera’s highest setting (2048 x 1764 pixels Fine) you can store 9 images. I normally use the 2048 x 1764 pixels Standard setting and you could fit 17 images on a 16mb card. I have invested in a 128mb card and this is enough for storing up to 150 images.
The quality of the images is very good and they are of high enough quality to be able to print good quality images.
Overall, I would recommend this camera to anyone who is considering it. Whether you are a novice or an expert this camera is easy to use, has a very wide range of features and produces excellent pictures.
