We purchased our new camera shortly before Christmas, and it is certainly the best buy we made over the Christmas period.
The picture quality, even on the memory-saving 'economy' mode, is excellent, capturing details at least as well and possibly better than 35mm. The variety of picture modes - four choices of resolution from 640x480 to 2048x1536, three choices of colour quality - allow you to customise you picture taking to suit your available memory, making the 16Mb card that comes with the camera go a lot further than you'd think.
The available features make this an extremely versatile camera. It can be set on 'auto' and used easily as a 'point-and-shoot' camera, or you can easily select a specific mode for more detailed work. If you're an experienced photographer, you can also select the settings yourself. This variety of settings makes the camera excellent for everyone from a five-year-old to an experienced photographer.
There is a slight downside, of course. The design is somewhat awkward - using the viewfinder requires pressing your face against the LCD screen, some of the controls can be a little hard to find when using the camera, and the menus used to set things like focus are rather difficult to navigate. It also seems rather difficult to find accessories specifically for this camera - I've had a carrying case on order for it for over a month, and it still has not arrived. However, this is a minor niggle, and not really a problem with the design of the camera itself.
All in all, this is an excellent camera for anyone from a complete beginner to a seasoned photographer.
