I've been looking for a digital camera recently and after careful consideration I went for the DiMage Z1 and don't regret it for an instant! I thought it was a bargin when I paid £220 for it, now you can get it for only £180 then anyone who is buying a camera should consider this one. It has all the usual features (video, red eye reduction etc) plus a few more bells and whistles I haven't been brave enough to play with yet!!!
I have to say this is the easiest camera I've used, the dial on top controls the modes for taking pictures. Taking pictures and reviewing taken pictures is as easy as turning a switch, you can even zoom in on the pictures you've taken. The setup of the camera (pic quality, size etc) is accessed by 1 button and the scroll buttons are easy to use also. The LCD screen is very good, even in direct sunlight you can still rely on it to see what you're photographing.
Of the 3 quality settings (economy, standard & fine) I've only used standard which has produced faultless pictures, with only an average file size of 600KB. The camera uses SD (secure digital) as the media to store pictures which I've found to be very economic, for example I've bought a 256MB card for only £35! Another handy function with SD cards is that you can lock them so precious photos can not be deleted.
The zoom range is one of the reasons why I bought it, I've not seen another camera with as wide a zoom at a price as cheap as this (X10 optical, X4 digital) Even zooming in as far as possible the camera still keeps focus extremly well.
I think this camera has been aimed at both the beginner and more advanced user. The auto setting is all I've used to take pics (where the aperture, lens speed atc are all done by the camera) However there is also 4 settings I haven't used where you can manually change the aperture, the shutter speed, you can select different areas (of pic) to focus on before capturing.
I've rated the durability such because the lens cap broke, it just means I'll be buying the soft case sooner than I thought!!!
The flash has not dissapionted me once. The only downside to the camera I've found is that the batteries don't last very long, aside from that I consider this a fantastic buy and wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to anyone
