For about 4 years, I've had a Fujitsu Finepix Compact (Digital, 1.3 megapixel) which recently I dropped and broke the LCD, so I looked for a 3-megapixel digital but wanted a fairly decent zoom and came up with the Minolta DiMage Z1. - WOW!!! From the reviews I had read previously, I thought this was the answer to my dreams so emptying my money box i ran to the camera shop!! The only thing that had me worried at all about this cam was the build quiality but yet on recieving this beauty and playing with it solidly for many weeks now I have not managed to find anything even slightly worng with it, if i have one grip it is that unless you are careful you may easily snap of the plastic door to the moemory card slot.,
I think the camera is an excellent buy. The 10x optical zoom combined with the various picture-taking modes (e.g. macro, red-eye, etc.) seem to deliver excellent picture quality. I have been able to get my images printed out at print quality at A3 size. Also, the time spent from zoom to autofocus to actually taking the picture is more than respectable. I have found this to be less than 0.5 secs. The menu system is easy to navigate I can manage to switch modes now without even looking to the display. For example, the movie mode offers three resolutions and is limited only by the size of your memory card you can swap these modes by flicking one button. In continuous mode, the camera saves only the most recent five pictures taken. Between this and the 10x optical zoom, the camera is very useful for sports photography. In movie mode you can;t zoom only take the shot at curretn zoom level, also when recording you seem to get a nasty clicking niose as the autofocus tries to keep us, It does a sterling job only for the nasty noise which you get over your final recording on playback, but this is not of masive concern for such a great camera.
Strengths: ---------------- 10x optical zoom Excellent picture quality Continuous mode saves 5 most recent shots Easy-to-navigate menu system LCD screen works well in low light Zoom, autofocus, and picture taking are reasonably fast Weaknesses: --------------------- Clicking noise when in movie mode. Weak sliding cover to mem card slot. So AntiShake Noisy Zoom!
Similar Products Used: ---------------------------------- Finepix 3500 Coolpix s1 Dimage x350 Price --------- Around £140 Ex Vat.
Alternatives ------------------- Having used my freinds new EASYSHARE Z7590 (Kodak) I would recommend this also, it is more expensive but of better build quality and doesnt suffer the movie noise.
