Manufacturer's product description

Stay true to your film images with a film scanner that's truly up to the job - the DiMAGE Scan Dual IV. Its high performance 3.200dpi CCD lets you convert 35 mm film frames into breathtaking, 14-million pixel digital images. With this much detail, print enlargements can be as large as 58 cm x 38cm (22.8 inches x 15 inches) at 200 dpi inkjet output. The DiMAGE Scan Dual IV also features an exclusive drive mechanism and improved scanning software to ensure razor-sharp scans. Furthermore, an advanced optical system designed specifically for film scanning offers excellent color fidelity and sharpness. An exclusive film grain detection method delivers fast and accurate autofocusing, even with low-contrast images, and when you want to adjust focusing on a specific part of the film image, you can use Point Focus. To prevent dark area noise, you can set the scanner to extract more information from your film by sampling it 2, 4, 8, or 16 times. This feature makes the most of the rich gradations produced through 16-bit A/D conversion, and leads to smoother and clearer scans as a result. Once you've loaded your film, simply push the Quick Scan button and a software menu will appear on-screen. You can then choose the software that best fits your needs for that session: quick and easy printing, high volume scanning, and more. If you want total control over the final look of your image, you've got it. The DiMAGE Scan Dual IV lets you adjust a wide array of factors, such as tone curve, histogram, sharpness, brightness, exposure, and color balance. The adjustment window offers a convenient side-by-side view that allows you to compare the effects of your alterations against the original image. With the Easy Scan Utility, you simply specify the purpose you're scanning for, and the scanner delivers a correctly sized image. You can also easily adjust image quality. It's the simplest way to turn your photos into email attachments, printouts, desktop images, and more. Auto Dust Brush feature quickly cleans up your images, saving you the time and trouble of manual editing. What's more, a separate plug-in version of Auto Dust Brush is included for Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements. This plug-in lets you perform post-scan dust removal, select the area of dust removal, preview results, and adjust parameters. The DiMAGE Scan Dual IV comes equipped with a specially designed 35m Film Holder that allows you to scan the frame from edge to edge. The 35mm Film Holder holds down your filmstrip securely on all sides, ensuring better focusing accuracy during the scan. Also supplied with the scanner is the Slide Mount Holder, which holds up to 4 mounted slides. Thanks to USB 2.0 the DiMAGE Scan Dual IV can rapidly transfer high-volume scan data to your computer. The DiMAGE Scan Dual IV supports both Windows and Macintosh computers that have USB 2.0 as a standard interface.

Scan Dual II: older but still able
Review of Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II by querth

Advantages: High quality scans, aps capable
Disadvantages: Slow compared to newer models, noisy

...I've had a Scan Dual II for over a year now, in that time it has performed well without any hardware faults. Its maximum resolution of 2820dpi (dots per inch) yields TIF files (Tagged Image Format - a file format which compresses only slightly but retains full image quality) of around 30mb. The scans it produces are generally very sharp with good colour. However I've found it does tend to exaggerate the grain of the film slightly. The scanner comes complete with holders for mounted and un-mounted slides. These holders slot into the scanner with the film horizontal and so form a perfect platform for dust to settle on. This scanner has none of the Digital ICE technologies which are nowadays commonplace so invest in a blower brush if you want to avoid spending ages in Photoshop removing specks of dust! The mounted slide holder takes 4... Read review

Get those snaps onto your PC
Review of Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II by richkw

Advantages: A fine scanner at a budget price.
Disadvantages: Yet anotherthing to plug into your PC!

.../semi-pro photographer and three years ago I bought a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II brand new. These can now be found on Ebay for £100 or so and offer a fine machine at a rather more affordable price. The results I've had are truly superb, with fine detail and subtlties of colour faithfully reproduced. The Scan Dual II is a machine capable of scanning 35mm and APS (with optional adaptor) negatives with an output resolution of up to 2820dpi. This is more than enough to produce images on your PC which, after re-sizing will print at exhibition quality at A4. At A3, which few people would want to print, the quality still remains excellent with only a minor fall off in image quality. The unit measures 150x100x320mm and weighs in at 1.5kg., so it takes up little room on the desk top. Although it connects to your PC via a USB port, it needs to be powered via... Read review

Excellent colour rendition and resolution but slow
Review of Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400 by timbo_in_limbo

Advantages: Excellent colour rendition and resolution
Disadvantages: Slow to scan at top spec

...I say slow when referring to personal settings. When I bulk scanned photo's it was quick. The software for it has very good functionality but the bulk scan could be improved. You have to pre scan, correct the frame and final scan individually. It would be helpful if you could correct each one on an individual basis and then scan them all, that way you wouldn't have to come back to it every 10 mins. Another issue I encountered was it kept crashing my Pc. I tracked it down to the nforce 2 chipset, I tried three different branded motherboards and it crashed on all of them. I now have it set up on a pre N force 2 pc. Overall the quality of the pictures is great, but it is annoyingly slow... Read review
