Well this is my first opinion so please be gentle with me :)... I have always enjoyed Stephen King's style of writing and I came across this one while scanning through the library. I hadn't heard anything about it before and thought it would be good to check it out.
From start to finish I was gripped. I made time to read this book and enjoyed mostly all of it. In this story, Stephen King's narrative swallows you in, bringing you into the centre of the plot, making you feel part of it. You can fully imagine from his detailed description the emotions and fear the main charcater goes through. You have no choice but to feel the cold sweat on your foreheads, the discomfort of being bedridden and the fear of living with a mad woman..
His descriptions let you know just how cold it is, the size of the room, the lighting, etc. He writes descriptivly enough to create a lasting and strong image in your mind and leaves you thinking about the story and wanting more of the same stuff.
His characters are well developed. You can picture how they dress, look and move quite clearly. He lets you easily contrast the simple-minded yet strong tempered fan to the weak, suffering writer who can only do one thing to save his life from this woman.
Out of all the Stephen King books I have read so far, I enjoyed this one the most. Maybe because I hadn't heard of it before or seen the film, I had no idea what it would be about until I read it all for myself. After reading I was left with the feeling you get after watching a really good horror movie, the relief of surviving! I would recommend it to anyone who has a taste for descriptive horror, whether they have previously read Stephen King or not. It really demonstrates what Stephen King can do. If you are knew the the world of Stephen King, I htink this would be a great book to start with.
