This book is about an award winning writer: Paul Sheldon, who has a serious car accident. He falls unconcious and when he comes round he is in the house of one of his fans, Anne Wilkes. She says that she is his number one fan and has been nursing him back to health, as a bad storm has made it impossible to get him to the local hospital. Paul Sheldon is mostly famous for writing his books about fictional character Misery Chastain, which has the housewives of America hooked, especially, as it seems Anne Wilkes. However, Sheldon has tired of writing Misery books and has decided to end that part of his writing career and concentrate on writing more "serious" literature. When Anne reads one of his newer books she becomes enraged, and insists that he continues to write Misery books. When the new and final installment of the Misery saga is published it finally tips Wilkes over the edge and she becomes psychotic. As Sheldon is completely dependent on Wilkes, following the accident she is able to put him through absolute hell in an attempt to make him carry on writing Misery books. Eventually Sheldon has no option but to write another and sets about writing it, however he has a few tricks up his sleeve, and tries to contact the outside world. Towards the end of the book there are more, quite scary revelations about Wilkes, which Sheldon finds out, which makes it mush more imoprtant that he escapes. The latter half of the book is a fantastic battle of wits between Sheldon and Wilkes, fantastically written, which will make you unable to put the book down. King goes into graphic detail in parts of this book, and parts of it are quite shocking, but it is definitely a must read.
