These were pre-Internet days and you couldn't just Google "haemophilia" and find all you needed to know about it. In fact, dredging through our collective memories, all we could find were the facts that a) it had afflicted members of Europe's royal families and b) if someone with haemophilia scratched themselves they could bleed to death.
