I purchased a set of these speakers approximately 4 years ago. I was on a bit of a budget at the time so I didn't have a large choice of speakers. Anyway as it turned out I listened to a set of the speakers and was pleasantly surprised at how detailed they were and how much bass they gave away; especially in comparison with their direct competitors. I bought them at £129.99, at a time when the full retail was £199.99 as far as I was concerned these were an absolute bargain, especially being quite new to the game myself. They are a fairly large speaker, especially upon first introduction, but stand very tall and slim once in a room. Upon setting the speakers up with my system (Sherwood amplifier, and Technics cd player) I was simply gob smacked at how such a cheap system/speaker set-up could bring so many of my cd's back to life. One of the first tracks I played (and still a firm favourite) The Charlatans- The only one I know; sounded explosive as it thumped
through the speakers yet retained all the detail in the vocals and the classic organ sounds which a band of the era make good use of. The bass port is forward firing; therefore it doesn't matter too much where they are in the room. And all this in my own front room! I have continued to use these speakers, and they never fail to satisfy. Even with the arrival of my new B&W speakers I still can't part with such a lovely rich sounding speaker. The speaker will take anything you throw at it, from classical to Dance even the distorted beats of hip-hop. They will also put up with some hard work, you can drive them really hard without upsetting them in the slightest and they will continue to take the power for extended periods of use. And above all else when people see these dominant, yet sleek speakers they can't help but say wow. There big, but not too big, but do be sure that your room is big enough for the sound they produce...
My top tips for buying using and listening to Mission 702e's:-
These speakers are very cheap now, if you shop at the right outlets. I suggest looking in What Hi-Fi for prices, but I have seen them for as little as £79.99!!
Choose your amplifier very carefully, as some amps I listened to with these speakers gave some disappointing results. For instance the Technics amp as good as it is in its own right sounded very flat.
Listen to the speakers on a low volume for a period of time i.e. - 4 weeks or more. This will help to bed the speaker in, and avoid any unnecessary damage to the driver (Over driving the speaker).
Angle the speakers in the room, so that they are both pointing in the general direction of the place where you sit to listen to your music. Otherwise you will not get the full effect.
The speakers come with a set of spikes... Use them!! They will help isolate the bass, and stop it wallowing through the floor (Be it floorboards or concrete).
After a happy period of time bringing all your old cd's back to life, consider making use of the bi-wiring facility the speaker has. This will add a whole new dimension to the speaker, giving you even more value for money. Seek advice in doing this as it is difficult to explain and can be done wrong.
Some cd players have a dB + and - function. Think of this as a tap. You can usually only adjust this into the minus side, so presume our proverbial tap is already on. Set the amp volume to the required rate say a 1/4 of the dials rotation. Now press the minus button on your cd controller. This serves to 'close the tap' and slow the water down (sound gets quieter). What this is actually doing is stopping as much information going into the amp, therefore letting the amp deal with the information at its own rate. This will achieve two things. 1. It will make the speaker sound clearer, and make it sound less like a collision of sounds i.e. treble and bass crashing at very loud volumes. And 2. It will avoid over driving the speaker (easily done at parties).
Always replace the dust covers after use, they have a white cone which looks great... but won't continue to do so after prolonged exposure to a dusty environment, and all your friends wanting to touch the 'lovely white bit'.
There is only one thing to watch out for with this speaker and that is. If you do overdrive the speaker early into its life, it has been known for the main driver unit (White cone) to fall in the cabinet. This is a fairly uncommon fault, but one that will happen early on if at all, but won't be helped by over amorous listening.
Above all else enjoy the speakers, you won't believe what you have just got for your money and will be pinching yourself to check that they are that good. Especially if you are a novice to hi-fi separates. The speakers encouraged me to listen to more varieties of music, and helped me enjoy it effortlessly...
