Whilst in the cradle, all buttons, sockets and other ... more
Today's PDAs add functionality and extend their usefulness by allowing you to synchronise data items- such as calendar appointments and email- with your home computer, meaning that you don't have to enter the info twice in order to have it both on your central workstation and in your pocket. This does mean, however, that you need to be able to connect your PDA somehow to your PC. There are a few methods of doing this- bluetooth, wi-fi or cable.
The Mio 168 Digiwalker from Mitac (please see my dedicated review for more information) doesn't come with bluetooth as standard, it's difficult to find an appropriate adaptor, and when you do, it's expensive. The relevant cables for both charging and synchronising your Mio 168 are included in the box, but these don't offer a very tidy solution- the ideal situation with a PDA such as the this, is to be able to simply plug it into your computer whenever you happen to be passing, and let it do the work. The supplied cable does the trick, but to charge and synchronise at the same time requires cables trailing across the room, between mains socket, USB port and PDA, which is just left to lie in whatever space happens to be available on your desk.
The generic (unbranded) cradle that I picked up for £11.99 seems to be a decent solution for the low-end Mio 168 user: You don't want to spend loads on a flash acccessory, but you do want to make the whole experience of synchronising and charging that bit simpler.
This cradle simply plugs in to a spare USB port on your computer. It is manufactured with USB 2.0 in mind, but is backwards compatible with other versions. After plugging in for the first time, Windows installs the drivers automatically- no driver CD is included because it isn't needed. Instructions are included on a small, folded piece of paper, but these are provided simply for peace of mind. Once plugged in and installed- mere seconds after opening the package- you just slot your Mitac Mio 168 Digiwalker in (that is assuming you have already installed the synch software for the PDA according to its instructions)- the cradle automatically starts to charge your PDA, and the PDA and your installed synchronising software take control of everything else. Breaking the connection is just as simple- just remove the PDA, and go.
Whilst in the cradle, all buttons, sockets and other items (such as the stylus, speaker and IR port) are accessible,+ -+ apart from the headphones socket. As this is primarily provided for in-car use, I don't see this as a problem.
The cradle is made from black, moulded plastic which feels sturdy and solid. Whilst by no means a heavy stand, it is well balanced when holding the PDA, and you're not likely to knock it over if it's out of the way. Four rubber pads on the base help to keep the cradle stable and make sure it doesn't slide about all over the place. The USB cable is fixed, and is about 1/2 a metre in length- plenty to reach behind your computer from the desk if you have a fairly normal setup.
Some more technical info, for those of you who are curious:
- The cradle charges your PDA using the computer's power supply, via the USB port. You can, however, plug the Mio 168's power supply (supplied with the PDA) into the cradle, so that it takes its power from the mains, leaving your computer's USB ports with more power, should you find yourself short.
- USB Data Hotsync: This is technical jargon which basically means you can plug it in and get going- no need to restart your computer or mess around with switches.
- Power protection circuit included: In the event of a potentially harmful (to your device) power surge, the cradle will protect your PDA.
- LED power indicator: SImply put, a bright blue LED shines when the cradle is plugged in and recieving power, and goes out when it's not.
- Fast charging: Exactly what it says on the tin- I find that the cradle usually charges my PDA faster than the originally supplied charger does, but this depends on various factors, including how many other USB devices you have connected to your computer.
As for bad points- there aren't many. With such a simple device, there's not much that can go wrong. One thing I will mention, however, is that the LED is really bright, and you can't turn it off without unplugging the cradle. This means that if, like me, you'd like to charge your PDA overnight, and your computer is in your bedroom, you'll be bathed in a bright blue light which does a fair job of illuminating your entire room. Other than that, I have no gripes so far.
To sum up, this is a great piece of kit- inexpensive, sturdily built and cleans up a potential mess of cables on your work desk. It's not at the forefront of technology, but then that isn't the audience that this gizmo is aimed at. If you can cope with an eerie blue glow coming from your computer room at night, then there's no other reason to pass this nifty little gadget by.
Advantages: Cheap, powerful, compact, flexible, easy to learn, very expandable Disadvantages: No integrated BlueTooth, WiFi, Camera, fragile USB power connection
Fantastic PDA with integrated GPS & can be expanded with BlueTooth, WiFi, Barcode Scanners, Cameras, TV Out & more! Amazing performer and very cheap! Runs all the popular Satellite Navigation software very well indeed such as TomTom, iGO, Destinator etc. An incredible range of software is available to do almost anything imaginable. *** EDIT: SOON TO BE RELEASED EXPANSION SDIO DIGITAL TV TUNER/PVR CARD! ***

Advantages: Affordable; compact; stylish; good quality; combines two useful pieces of kit Disadvantages: No standard GPS software included
The market for PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) with built- in GPS reciever is yet young, and it is this fact which makes the Mio 168 a rather nifty bit of kit.
Being one of the forerunners of its kind, the unit is remarkably well priced, although I would urge potential purchases to shop around- when I was looking, prices and packages varied wildly as the unit is not supplied as standard with any GPS software.
One thing which remained constant ... ...kit. This includes a USB cable for synchronisation with a windows- based computer; mains charger (with UK and European socket adaptors); car charger; windscreen mount; and storage pouch.
Having recieved the Mio 168 Digiwalker, setup and operation of the standard PDA/ Pocket PC features was simple: a quick-start guide is included as well as a comprehensive manual, and after flicking a switch and powering up the unit, the setup utility started automatically ...

Advantages: A PDA and sat nav system in one Disadvantages: Looks cheap and tacky
...individual units.
Take the Mitac Mio. I like PDAs - they combine a media player (to play both MP3's and JPEG video), personal organiser, a gaming machine and several other items all in one. However, the sound quality of a PDA is not up to that of an Ipod. The video quality of a PDA is not up to that of a portable DVD player. Point made?
That said, if you are on a train it is awkward to carry an Ipod, portable DVD player, personal organiser etc ... ...for my requirements.
The Mitac 168 combines a PDA with a sat nav. system. And whilst the PDA is of inferior quality the Sat Nav element of the Mitac is most definitely not. It is on par with stand alone GPS units such as Navman, Tomtom etc.
The Mitac has a built in GPS receiver. If any of the readers of this review have ever had to sync an external GPS receiver to a PDA then they will appreciate what an excellent feature this is. I used to have ...

Advantages: GPS, Large LCD Screen, Clear Sound, Extra Memory Support Disadvantages: No Bluetooth, No Wifi,
The Mitac Mio 168 really does boast in all aspects. Firstly, the Mitac Mio 168 was my second PDA, after being disheartened with my first ACER pda, I was rather disheartened by it's low battery life, and data beeing lost almost every week not forgetting it's dull and dismal screen colour and backlight.
Keeping the faith, and being recommended by a friend of the family "The Mitac Mio 168", really appealed to me after having a demo. It's main feature ... ...One Navigator. The Mitac Mio isn't only Stylish, and Sleek to withhold in you're pocket, but offers some nice tools and gadgets, obviously one being the GPS integration, and the others being the personal organiser, quick notes, office word and excel, and the MP3 player. Ideally, the device as a SD/MMC Slot for memory expansion, I highly recommend putting at least 2GB card in as it's worthy for MP3's, Videos, and just extra memory for the PDA to perform ...

Advantages: Intergrated GPS / Easy to navigate / Included Car Kit w-Charger / SD Memory upgradeable / VALUE FOR MONEY !!! Disadvantages: Reasonable Battery Life / Slower Processor than more recent models / Cable, not cradle
Straight out of the box, the Mio 168 is a little beauty, a gem of design intergration of a fully functional Windows Pocket PC 2003 (Intel Xscale PXA-255 300 Mhz / 32MB ROM / 64MB SDRAM) with a SiRF compatible GPS reciever!! - very quick GPS start up time. Better than most GPS dedicated units, in my experience
Some PDA's are sleaker some are faster, but virtually no other model in this price range offers so much for so little. It can handle almost ... ...throw at it and together with the included car kit, have the perfect solution to the modern car - Total Satalite Navigation!!
I use my Mio every day and have never found it to be slow, even though i use fast technical equipment all day - it keeps up with the best of them! I also use mine as an MP3 player, as the SD/MMC expansion slot allows unlimited upgradeability and the installed media playback software with handle just about any format (MP3/MP4/WAV/AAC ...
