Reliability: If you exclude the automatic gearbox (see below), the reliability has been second to none. In the three years I have owned the car it has passed each MOT without fault, the only costs being incurred have been routine servicing and tyres. The ancillary electrical devices, such as windows, remote locking, CD, etc. have also continued to operate faultlessly.
Automatic Gearbox: This is the cars Achilles heel, Mine has failed twice since I've had the car. Looking at other reviews it is a very common problem. According to the gearbox specialist that repaired the car on each occasion there is a quite serious design fault; the gearbox input shaft is too short and does not engage fully with the torque converter, it only goes in half way, hence the all to regular failure. Each repair has cost me £700.
Driving: The Galant is a relatively big car executive style car. The 2.5 liter V6 isn't particularly powerful for such an engine but there is still a reasonable amount available. The car is plenty fast enough and the engine well matched to the chassis, it's no sports car but it is a great way to travel. It is perfect for motorways and despite its size it is just at home performing duties on short local trips. The gearbox, when it is working, is by far the best I have ever tried, silky smooth shifts perfectly timed, a brilliant design ruined. The car has cruise control as well, I find this particularly useful when driving long stretches of roadworks that have speed cameras, it saves having to constantly check your speed. The suspension is not too firm and gives a good ride. A galant is always a pleasure to drive.
Handling: Safe and predictable with plenty of grip. As I mentioned above, the V6-24 is not meant to be a sports car, however the handling completments the chassis engine perfectly. The car will not through up any nasty surprises, unless your being stupid.
Performance: While there is enough power there, be careful what you try racing away from lights; a. the gearbox might break and b it can be embarrassing getting beaten by a modern 2 liter diesel. An auto doesn't have the same bite as a manual and takes a little longer to really get moving. On the move it is fine, overtaking can be accomplished quickly and easily. The gearbox doesn't have a sports mode, instead it is supposed to adapt to you driving style, the trouble with this is for the odd occasion when you want to get a move on, by the time it has re-calibrated itself you are back to normal driving again. But then again that's what kickdown is for. If it's out and out performance you want get the twin turbo VR4.
Costs: At insurance group 14 it's never going to be cheap to cover, but with a few years NCD it's not too bad, I pay just under £400 fully comp with full no claims discount. Fuel economy isn't great, but what do you expect from a 2.5? Mid twenties around town and mid to high thirties at about 80 on the motorway, that's what. Servicing is not unreasonable but the odd item can be horrendously expensive, I was charged £120 for a set of spark plugs (gulp) but they do last a very long time. Expect to pay around £150 for and annual service and £320 for the big one.
Safety: There are additional side air bags to provide extra protection but it's size would also be a big asset in a crash. Avoiding a crash in the first place is preferable and the cars competent handling and good brakes help here.
Colour & Image: The colour of my car is not one of the best, described as Turqoise (a very dark turqiose), it shows dirt very quickly and so rarely looks like its been washed! As a result I rarely wash it... I can see this spiraling out of control!! In my opinion the Galant looks at its best in silver, there is also a very nice dark purple but I am not sure if this is limited only to the VR4 version. Some people regard the Galant as bland, but not me! In my opinion it has understated distinctive looks. The front end, commonly described as shark nosed is a bit different and I love it.
The Galant is a surprisingly uncommon car, far less numerous than any BMW, Mercedes, etc. and is, I believe, a well kept secret. I would not hesitate to buy another, so long as it was manual gearchange. I have owned this car longer than any other despite the gearbox problem, that has to say something. Ignoring the gearbox issue it deserves five stars, but it is too important to ignore so I could only give it three. Likewise, I cannot, because of the gearbox, recommend it to purchasers. If it was a manual things would be so different.
Advantages: Decent spec and looks for not a lot of money Disadvantages: Everyone seems to like to dint the doors
As I travel in excess of 30,000 miles per year for work people scoffed at my decision to purchase this car stating Japanese and v6 and petrol and automatic blah blah blah. However having now owned two of these cars over the past 4 years (only because some kind sole trashed the first one on the M1 for me thanks!). I a, only pleased to say many positive things about these cars -
1) Economy I usually get around 28-32 mpg which is pretty darn good for ... ...clubs and tools around.
2) Servicing touch wood had no real issues with either apart from the brake pads although mine is the auto with about 3 tonnes of rubbish in so it does take some stopping especially when in rally mode.
3) Cabin Spec this is probably one of the most back friendly cars I have driven. My journeys are often 3+hours and I have yet to extract myself from the car with groans and aches.
4) Cost these cars cost around 24k-26k new ...

...is an option. I think Mitsubishi offer several options when you buy new, with the 'diamond pack' being the highest level of fitted extras.
The Galant sits on 195/65 r14 v rated tyres which it needs considering it will do over 140mph. I got mine from Mytyres.net at around £50 each.
It is a powerful car indeed but I spent many months researching the whole 2.5 v6 area and this car seems to offer the best combination of power and economy with Mitsubishi's ... ...am waiting to see if Mitsubishi feel sufficiently embarrassed to help with fixing a car that has failed after only 30,000 miles.
Needless to say I won't be buying another Mitsubishi car and so far have recieved no help with the cost.
and here's the good bit (if you like ) replacement auto box ( used unit + part exchange allowance for my broken gearbox of £350 ) best part of £2000.
New auto box getting on for £3500.
It may be a lovely car to drive, look ...

Advantages: Spacious, comfortable, well equipped, rear wheel arches intrude in cargo space Disadvantages: Costly to run, noisy, up to 80mph, then quiet.
...has done 51000+ miles, full mitsubishi service history, but missed its last service, now it is due a 54000 mile service, or will be soon, what a shock, £200 Cam belt change????, service, £340+ Vat, you cannot expect to have a big car, and then complain about the cost, that is part and parcel, and if you dont want to pay it, then dont buy it, but that is daylight robbery, spark plugs, platinum, £ 18.86 each, from motor factor, ie, Cafco, a guide only,Cam ... ...rip off, typical UK.
However the car, very nice, cosy, comfy, heating is good, heated seats excellent, Cd is a 6changer, fantastic, radio good, but cassette, stuck in player, wont eject, ( first one, anyone help me to get it out ), or is that another £ 50, courtesy of Mitsubishi, and the rip off prices, they charge. Fuel, I do 6 miles to work and back, 18 mpg, dual carriage way, 7 Mpg less than my Vectra 2.0 Sri that I had before, so cant complain. ...

Advantages: Looks great and is surprisingly quick. Disadvantages: Noisy, uncomfortable, expensive to run, depreciation!
I have had my galant v6 sport automatic estate for 8 years. I still love the way it looks and its 0-60 of 6.5 seconds, but....and there are a lot of buts.....I hate the noise, the discomfort, the expensive low profile tyres and the servicing costs! Steering box packed up (£2,500) , water pump packed up (£400), alternator belt shredded (£10)!
I dont like having to pay £80 every year to have leaves removed from the interior fan!
Oh, and the clock ... ...can live without that.
Tyres have been an issue...OEM Dunlops were crap. Tried firestone, better, then michellin pilot sport, better still, then michellin exalto, even better. But road noise is a major issue as is a rock hard ride. So its done 97,000 miles. Only been serviced by rallyart technician, yet still has given me grief. I now have noisy hydraulic tappets which will cost £600 to replace.
And how much is this car worth? £22,000 new....Y ...
